Update:

  • General Motors must face class action claims that certain transmissions in its vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions.
  • On Aug. 28, a 6th Circuit panel rejected GM’s motion to dismiss the claims, saying it found no reason to undo class certification for the drivers.
  • The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or delay acceleration.
  • They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies.

(April 25, 2024)

A group of 13 consumers claims certain transmissions in General Motors vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions, according to a new GM transmission class action.

The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or have delayed acceleration.

They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies. This, the class action argues, is the cause of the shudder, lurching and delayed acceleration, as well as overall poor shift quality.

GM class action: Automaker elected not to recall, replace defective transmissions

The GM transmission issues happen around the time the affected vehicles’ warranties run out, the class action claims. The plaintiffs allege that GM covers fluid flushes for customers who complain about their transmissions during the warranty period, without fixing the underlying issues.

GM engineers asked the company to fix the transmission issues for $305 a vehicle, which would have cost GM about $592 million, according to the lawsuit.

GM instead only replaced the defective transmission in 6,518 unsold Cadillacs and trucks in certain states where it expected customers to complain within warranty, the GM class action claims.

Six drivers filed a 2022 class action lawsuit alleging that several vehicles manufactured by GM are equipped with defective eight-speed transmissions and that GM concealed the defects from buyers for years.

  1. Atoyia Orders says:

This is the second transmission I’ve had to replace in the last 10 years each one costing over 5500 to replace .

  2. Bernicene Griffin says:

My 2016 Cadillac SRX jerks when accelerating, plus the ABS equipment needs replacing and the Cadillac dealership as well as 2 local mechanics has advised the manufacturer of the part went bankrupt and there is no replacement. Real boomer something needs to be done.

  3. Monique E says:

2016 Cadillac Escalade ESV. Jerks right now, my husband got it for me before passing and I would like to keep it.

  4. Cory Howerton says:

My 2018 Chevrolet Traverse around 36000 had shuddering and transmission issues. Under warranty Chevrolet dealership supposedly fixed issue. Now at 105000 started having same issues. When you accelerate the first few gears at low rpm shudders and hangs in a gear. It also doesn’t shift then it will. At fast speed no issues, just at a stop and accelerating. Please let me know what to do. This feeling like it is getting worst and now I’m out of warranty.

  5. James Duran says:

I have a 2013 Chevy 1500 Silverado LTZ, is that also included

  6. LaTanya Turner says:

Yes, I am having that issue now and it keeps getting worse. I have a 2017 GMC Acadia SLE-1

  7. Don says:

I’ve owned a 2017 CT6 for 7 years and have experienced a multitude of problems with this 8 speed transmission. Nothing the dealer does seems to be a cure and many times I’m told “that’s just the way it shifts” in other words go away and don’t bother us again. Other than the tranny, it’s a great car and I’d like to keep it but ownership is become very painful.

  8. Jessie says:

I had to replace my 2019 Cadillac Escalade ESV transmission at 91k miles in Nov 2023 – $8000 repair. How can I get ahold of the firm handling this?? I had these EXACT issues!

  9. Ernest MacNeill says:

same issue with 2019 Chevy Silverado

  10. Amy Thommen says:

Same issue for my 2012 Chevy Malibu LTZ, transmission sometimes doe snot want to switch from gear to gear and I have to put it in manual mode, slow down to almost a standstill, then switch gear manually, then go back to Drive mode and then it does it works… Nothing to do with temperature or whether it was raining or not, happens all the time… Had this issue since I bought it (used) and dealership said back then they cannot do anything, don’t know what’s going on…
