Update:

  • General Motors must face class action claims that certain transmissions in its vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions.
  • On Aug. 28, a 6th Circuit panel rejected GM’s motion to dismiss the claims, saying it found no reason to undo class certification for the drivers.
  • The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or delay acceleration.
  • They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies.

(April 25, 2024)

A group of 13 consumers claims certain transmissions in General Motors vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions, according to a new GM transmission class action.

The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or have delayed acceleration.

They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies. This, the class action argues, is the cause of the shudder, lurching and delayed acceleration, as well as overall poor shift quality.

GM class action: Automaker elected not to recall, replace defective transmissions

The GM transmission issues happen around the time the affected vehicles’ warranties run out, the class action claims. The plaintiffs allege that GM covers fluid flushes for customers who complain about their transmissions during the warranty period, without fixing the underlying issues.

GM engineers asked the company to fix the transmission issues for $305 a vehicle, which would have cost GM about $592 million, according to the lawsuit.

GM instead only replaced the defective transmission in 6,518 unsold Cadillacs and trucks in certain states where it expected customers to complain within warranty, the GM class action claims.

Six drivers filed a 2022 class action lawsuit alleging that several vehicles manufactured by GM are equipped with defective eight-speed transmissions and that GM concealed the defects from buyers for years.

Please add me to this class action suit, my 2017 Silverado is having the same problem at 92,000 miles. The GM dealership is asking me to pay over $8,000 to repair the damages incurred from this problem.

  2. Don Stephens says:

I have a 2019 jeep wrangler unlimited that had that transmission. It went out right at end of warranty and had to spend over $5000 to replace transmission.

  3. Sara B says:

I just had to replace my transmission in November 2023 on my 2016 Silverado LTZ. Had 130K miles and isn’t even paid off yet. One weekend it just started slipping and I limped it home and that was the end of it. $5800 for a new Jasper transmission. My step father retired from GM Hydra-Matic and we’ve always bought GM. Never again will we buy domestic, they’re too unreliable and have major break downs. This isn’t for lack of maintenance

Same problem with My Chevy Traverse

  5. Thomas B Dahl says:

I bought a new 2019 GMC Acadia Denali $52,000. Stopped for gas ( luckily at home, not on road tirp) and when I started to leave, it would not go into drive. Tried several times. It did go into reverse, so I backed into a parking space and called GM road service. It took 2 1/2 hours for them to get there on a Saturday . It was fixed under wattenty but they kept my car for over three weeks. It also had the shift into park issue too. Now at around forty-five mph it skips or misses little.

    1. Thomas Dahl says:

Forgot to say only had 30k miles on it just happened recently

  6. Steve M says:

I have this issue currently with my 2018 pickup, I’ve brought it by a GM dealership, but they stated they can’t replicate the issue. I don’t drive it much, but the warranty is expired and I only have 33K on it, My dad also had this issue, the dealership flushed the tranny and sent him on his way, his is also a 2018. This issue rears it’s ugly head around 30ish thousand miles
