Update:

  • General Motors must face class action claims that certain transmissions in its vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions.
  • On Aug. 28, a 6th Circuit panel rejected GM’s motion to dismiss the claims, saying it found no reason to undo class certification for the drivers.
  • The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or delay acceleration.
  • They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies.

  • Where: The GM transmission class action was filed in federal court in Michigan.

(April 25, 2024)

A group of 13 consumers claims certain transmissions in General Motors vehicles from the last decade are defective and can create unsafe driving conditions, according to a new GM transmission class action.

The plaintiffs say GM’s Hydra-Matic 8L90 and Hydra-Matic 8L45 transmissions manufactured between 2014 and March 2019 can cause vehicles to shudder, lurch forward or have delayed acceleration.

They allege the issues are caused by transmission fluid issues, which can allegedly cause the GM transmissions to fail to purge air properly from valve bodies. This, the class action argues, is the cause of the shudder, lurching and delayed acceleration, as well as overall poor shift quality.

GM class action: Automaker elected not to recall, replace defective transmissions

The GM transmission issues happen around the time the affected vehicles’ warranties run out, the class action claims. The plaintiffs allege that GM covers fluid flushes for customers who complain about their transmissions during the warranty period, without fixing the underlying issues.

GM engineers asked the company to fix the transmission issues for $305 a vehicle, which would have cost GM about $592 million, according to the lawsuit.

GM instead only replaced the defective transmission in 6,518 unsold Cadillacs and trucks in certain states where it expected customers to complain within warranty, the GM class action claims.

Six drivers filed a 2022 class action lawsuit alleging that several vehicles manufactured by GM are equipped with defective eight-speed transmissions and that GM concealed the defects from buyers for years.

My 2017 GMC had the same transmission had to replace once had another problem again sold the vehicle couldn’t keep up with the cost GM refused to fix it so now I no longer have my truck

  2. Dee Weidner says:

I have a 2016 GMC SIERRA with a Hydromatic 8L90 transmission. We have had issues with the vehicle as described above with the lurching, etc.

  3. Simon Edwards says:

I have a 2017 GMC Sierra with an 8 speed transmission. I had my transmission flushed at the dealer for this exact issue. The dealer told me there was a service bulletin issued but not a recall. The mechanic told me GM tried to use a lifetime synthetic fluid in the transmissions that starts to run too thin over time, which causes the issues. The dealer performed a “power flush” of my transmission. The bill for that was over $900 which was covered by the service bulletin.

  4. Darran Jones says:

Although I don’t qualify for this lawsuit, I had the same thing happen with a 1999 Suburban with the 4L80 transmission. Even though they came out with a Tech Bulletin about it, they never recalled it. I had just passed the 60K warranty (64K) and they refused to help. Second one gave out at about 125K. Both were replaced with new factory GM transmissions. Traded it in soon after. GM IS KNOWN FOR DOING THIS!!!! Please hold them accountable.

  5. LeQueda says:

My boyfriend just had a transmission put in because of the same issues listed above. He owns a 2014 GMC Yukon XL. please add me to this list or help me

  6. Jonathan Claybrook says:

I have a 2016 Yukon XL, and am currently in the process of having a third transmission installed. I don’t know if this particular model had the transmissions that you listed above, but I certainly had the exact same issues with it. I would be interested in joining the class action if that is a possibility

  7. Christopher Cote says:

I have owned my 2016 Gmc Sierra 1500 Denali since 2019 and it has those defects during operation. While not all the time or I just don’t notice because so use to the drive now. I have also had to have major engine repair done due to the rod and bearings needing to be replaced. A cost of over $5000.00 (yes I have receipts). I am definitely interested in this case.

  8. Gordon says:

2017 Escalade ESV… Been to Cadillac dealership as certified vehicle many times for transmission issues. Believe likely same root problem described in this suit. Even experienced motor mount break which I have researched and can likely be related to the actions of these transmission issues and result of vehicle jerking. Only 90K on vehicle. This is very concerning for what should be GM’s high quality vehicle.

  9. Lindsay Spriggs says:

    Please add me!

  10. James C says:

We have a 2015 GMC Yukon XL Denali. Probably need to be included in this. Thank you.
