GM fuel pump settlement overview:
- Who: General Motors has reached a $50 million settlement with drivers of certain diesel trucks and vans.
- Why: The plaintiffs said their vehicles were fitted with CP4 fuel pumps that came with “catastrophic” complications.
- Where: The GM fuel pump settlement was filed in a Michigan federal court.
General Motors has reached a preliminary $50 million settlement agreement with drivers who accuse it of selling vehicles with CP4 fuel pumps that are “ticking time bombs.”
The plaintiffs filed a motion indicating their support for the proposed settlement on June 7. The settlement would end class action claims that GM knowingly sold diesel trucks equipped with CP4 high-pressure fuel injection pumps supplied by Bosch.
Although these fuel injection pumps reportedly saved money for GM, the pumps allegedly resulted in “catastrophic” complications.
The plaintiffs alleges the CP4 fuel pumps are not compatible with American diesel fuel and reportedly “run the pump nearly dry so that it destroys itself, and — ultimately — destroys the fuel injection system and engine altogether.”
Judge: Proposed settlement appears fair
On July 11, a Michigan federal judge indicated he would give his initial approval to the settlement, Law360 reports.
U.S. District Judge Terrence G. Berg said the class settlement with GM seemed to give a fair amount of payment to drivers who say they either overpaid for their allegedly defective vehicles or had to pay out of pocket for repairs.
“The pump secretly deposits metal shavings and debris throughout the fuel injection system and the engine until it suddenly and catastrophically fails without warning,” the CP4 fuel pump lawsuit argues.
The settlement covers customers who purchased certain-year GMC and Chevrolet diesel trucks that were fitted with 6.6L V8 Duramax LML engines or LGH engines equipped with a CP4 fuel injection pump from GM-authorized dealerships in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.
Under the settlement, GM would pay $50 million to compensate truck owners who paid out of pocket for repairs to their engines due to the alleged defect and former owners who allegedly overpaid for their vehicles. Drivers who had to pay for repairs could see between $6,300 and $12,700, depending on the number of claimants, Law360 reports.
GM also agreed to provide a 12-month future limited warranty that covers 50% of the cost of repair or replacement if a fuel pump on a class member’s car fails during the warranty period, which begins after final approval of the settlement.

Mine is in my back yard, cant drive it, pump out 2 years. Truck is paid off. Cant fix it.
I had a 2016 Silverado with the 6.6 duramax engine I had 94,000 on it when my fuel pump exploded and it cost me $700.00 to get it towed back to my dealership and it cost me $14,500.00 to get it fixed and two weeks without work. So I feel I’m I need some of my money back since I called GM right away and they told me it had to many miles on it and they would not help me.
my 2017 savannah diesel van bought brand new has 53,000 miles on it. looks brand new. had zero stalling issues. then jan 2, it died crossing 4 lane road. almost got t-boned. scared me to death. it took dealer 19 days to figure out metal in fuel line. now they want $6k-$11k to repair. & will take up to another 3 weeks to repair. GMC needs to pay for their mistakes. not me. count me in on lawsuit!
i have a 2017 savannah diesel van. fuel pump damaged sending metal thru lines to engine. GM saying $6k-$11k to repair. only 53k on van. van looks new. bunch of nonsense!!
2016 duramax put me down while pulling a trailer on on major hwy in fla took near 6 weeks and over 13,000 to fix it bought mine Georgia
I was also wondering why other states are not included. We purchased our 2500 Silverado in 2015 in Georgia and the pump failed in 2021. It cost almost $12000 to repair it.
Hey Toni
Curious if you ever found anything out about your question? We also have a 2016 HD that the pump went out. Still in the shop
Did you all ever get an answer? Same situation with 2500 hd died in the middle of the interstate. Cost over 1000$ to tow it home from out of state and many more thousands to fix the part that failed again! Purchased in Oklahoma. Any response to your question about other states being included in the suit?
I am just curious about the class action. I have 2018 Silverado, not diesel, but Ive had fuel pump problems for the duration of ownership. I ve had it for 6 years now. The problem started one year after purchase. A fuel pump was replaced. One year to the date of the first replacement, it needed to be replaced again and thereafter, it has been an annual repair. Just this summer, I took it again to the dealership and they said it was a different part that was the problem and parts were replaced. One week later it wouldn’t start. Now, it has been parked for 3 months now. I can’t afford to keep taking it to garage. Is anyone having issues like this too? And what is the recourse to this? Who should it be reported to?
I originally purchased my vehicle while living in CA from Dave Smith Motors Kellog ID. Then, I had the cp4 pump failure and the repair of the fuel system was almost $10k while I was visiting in the listed state of FL and the tow and repair took place a couple yrs ago in FL. Add me to this
Why only the 7 states? We’re in COLORADO! This happened with our Silverado 2500 – 16K in repairs! Why are other states not inlcuded????
I would like to know the same thing why only 7 states are listed, they act like that is the only place these trucks were sold , I am on my 3rd cp4 fuel injection pump and system, this has really been a very costly deal for everyone who purchased these trucks , I been a loyal GM buyer all my life , somebody Needs to explain why only 7 states are listed
