A former electrician and mechanic is suing a number of large corporations after allegedly developing lung cancer from asbestos exposure. The electrician alleged the companies failed to warn him against the potential side effects of asbestos exposure, including the possibility of developing lung cancer from asbestos.
Plaintiff Michael C. filed this asbestos lung cancer lawsuit on June 21, 2017 against ABB Inc., AERCO International Inc., ALFA Laval Inc., and other manufacturers for failing to warn Michael and other consumers against the potential dangers associated with asbestos exposure.
According to the asbestos lung cancer lawsuit, Michael stated he had worked for a number of companies as an electrician and mechanic. During this time, he had reportedly ingested and inhaled asbestos fibers that were emitted from certain products manufactured by the companies.
Overview of Asbestos Exposure Complications
Over the past few years, there have been numerous cases of retired veterans and manufacturing laborers reportedly developing lung cancer from asbestos. Manufacturing and construction companies have been using asbestos for commercial means since the late 1800s.
While now highly regulated, asbestos was popularly used for insulation purposes for its chemical and fire resistant qualities. After reaching its popularity peak in World War II, health officials began to analyze the potential side effects associated with asbestos. It did not take them long to discover that asbestos was a carcinogen, and could potentially induce fatal consequences.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material, which can be seen through a microscopic lens. When dormant, this substance is harmless and makes for good insulation and other construction uses. If the fibers are released into the air, it could potentially compromise the health of individuals and the surrounding environment.
Once inhaled or swallowed, the asbestos fibers become lodged in the lungs or stomach and may fester over time. One of the primary health concerns associated with asbestos exposure is asbestos lung cancer, in which the fibers become lodged in the lungs.
Long term asbestos health complications can take years to show any symptoms, with asbestos lung cancer sometimes taking as long as 30-50 years to show any symptoms. This often results in delayed diagnoses and very few treatment options. Patients who discover they have developed lung cancer from asbestos, often find themselves facing short survival expectancies and surprised to learn they had the disease after so many years of dormancy.
Due to the severity of asbestos exposure, there are strict regulations in place to remove the fibrous material if its discovered. In addition, companies are required to warn employees or consumers against potential complications if their products contain asbestos or provide protective equipment.
Due to his daily asbestos exposure, Michael reportedly developed lung cancer from asbestos and was diagnosed with the disease on Jan. 20, 2016. Michael states that the companies failed to warn him against asbestos exposure, and failed to provide any protective equipment to him or other employees.
Michael is requesting a trial by jury, and is seeking judgment for compensatory damages for over $50,000 along with any punitive damages.
