Ford recall overview:

  • Who: Ford Motor Company is recalling 105,322 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.
  • Why: The recall is due to a defect in the seat belt pretensioner that may cause the seat belt to lock, preventing it from retracting or extending.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United States.

Ford has recalled more than 105,000 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles from model years 2018 to 2020 due to a seat belt defect that could increase the risk of injury during a crash.

The seat belt recall was issued on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on March 28 and affects specific models of Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles.

The issue lies with the seat belt pretensioner in the driver and front passenger seats, which may inadvertently lock, preventing the seat belt from retracting or extending as needed.

According to the recall notice, this malfunction can fail to restrain an occupant properly, heightening the risk of injury in the event of a collision.

“Seat belts that do not retract or extend can fail to restrain an occupant as intended, increasing the risk of injury in a crash,” the recall states.

Drivers should look out for warning signs, recall states

The recall notice advises owners to be vigilant for any signs that their seat belts are not functioning correctly. Ford has outlined that dealers will inspect the seat belt retractor date codes and replace the seat belt retractors if necessary, at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by April 14, 2025.

Concerned car owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall no. 25S31) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (recall 25V197000).

In February 2024, an identical recall for 77,000 model-year 2018-2020 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles was issued under recall no. 24V-099. Some vehicles in this recall did

not have parts replaced and will need to have this new recall remedy completed.

Ford said it had not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

  1. Jennifer Luffman says:

Last week I was driving 40 mph to work and had an extremely loud bang, on my drivers side and instant, extreme pain to my chest. It took the breath out of me literally. I eased off onto a grass median and called 911. I literally thought I had been shot or something had hit my car, but I couldn’t explain the chest pain. I didn’t even realize my seatbelt had retracted so tight. I have never experienced something so frightening. I did not have any idea what had happened. The paramedics literally treated me like a crazy person because I was insistent that something hit my car OR SOMETHING- I couldn’t explain the pain and noise. They continuously asked me if I suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and asked was it possible that I hit the concrete curb and just got anxious and thought something hit my car. I’M NOT CRAZY!!! I ended up in the ER, because they were concerned about my heart, and the paramedics put me on oxygen because I was low key hyperventilating….well anyone who knows about hyperventilation- you don’t put them on oxygen; my carbon dioxide was low and it only made it worse. Then my face and arm started going numb, and I was having a hard time speaking to them- so then I was being stroke tested in my car. Needless to say, it wasn’t until after having to be cleared from the ER that my heart was fine and x-rays taken to rule out anything broken from the seatbelt, did I find out about this issue with the recall. I actually had a service technician from the local dealership come to my home months ago and test my expedition for the seat belt pretensioner issue. He left when he was finished and said all good. Now I find out that they are replacing both driver and passenger side, because it was in fact bad. They told me that the technician wrote in the notes that the customer would need to take the car to the dealership for further repair once the “fix” for the recall was available. NO ONE TOLD ME THIS! NO ONE NOTIFIED ME OF THAT! Now, I’m scared to even wear a seatbelt, let alone think about what will happen if I actually get into an accident. I know seatbelts save lives, but that pain is intense. Now I’m stuck with an ER bill, ambulance bill, and a car that I don’t feel safe in any longer.
