Ford recall overview:
- Who: Ford Motor Company is recalling 1,448,655 vehicles, including models such as the Lincoln, Explorer, Fiesta, and Mustang.
- Why: The recall is due to rearview cameras that may fail to display images correctly, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.
- Where: The recall is effective in the United States.
Ford has issued a recall for more than 1.4 million vehicles due to a defect in the rearview cameras that could compromise driver safety.
The recall, announced Oct. 13, affects several models across different years, such as the 2015-2019 Ford Flex, 2015 Ford Explorer, and 2020 Ford Mustang, among others.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue lies in the camera’s inability to consistently display a clear image, thus reducing the driver’s rear visibility.
“A rearview camera that fails to properly display an image can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” the Ford recall notice says.
Ford recall offers free inspections and camera replacements
The recall notice emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue promptly. Ford will be sending out two letters to vehicle owners. The first letter, expected in October 2025, will inform them of the safety risk, while a second letter will be sent once the repair solution is available, anticipated in June 2026.
In the meantime, dealers are prepared to inspect and replace the faulty cameras at no cost to the vehicle owners.
“Dealers will inspect and, if needed, replace the camera for free,” the recall notice says. This proactive measure is intended to mitigate any potential hazards posed by the malfunctioning cameras.
Ford has also made it easy for owners to check if their vehicle is part of the Ford recall by searching their Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) on the NHTSA website.
For more information, affected consumers can contact Ford’s customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford’s internal recall number for this issue is 25SA9.
Ford says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Earlier this year, Ford issued a recall for 200,061 vehicles including models Bronco Sport, EcoSport, Edge, Escape, Expedition, Explorer, among others due to a similar software defect that could result in the camera displaying a blank image or the image remaining on the display after reversing.
