Ford Super Duty Pickup Trucks Driveshaft Recall Overview:
- Who: Ford is recalling 247,445 super duty pickups.
- Why: The pickups’ drive shafts can fracture and cause a loss of power.
- Where: The recall is nationwide.
Ford is recalling nearly 250,000 super duty pickup trucks because the drive shafts can fracture and cause a loss of power.
In a recall issued Feb. 16 on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, the company announced it was recalling certain F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups from the 2017 through 2022 model years.
The trucks have gasoline engines and aluminum drive shafts. Ford said the problem is that heat and noise insulators below the body can loosen and touch the drive shaft.
The shaft can then fracture, causing a power loss or loss of control if it hits the ground.
“Additionally, unintended movement could occur while parked if the parking brake is not engaged. Any of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash,” the recall says. “Dealers will inspect and repair the driveshaft as necessary, and properly attach the underbody insulators, free of charge.”
Ford Owners To Be Notified Beginning In April
Owners will be notified by letter starting Apr. 4. Ford recalled about 185,000 F-150 light duty pickups in the U.S. for the same problem in December.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
In 2020, F-Series truck owners became eligible to claim up to $400 in compensation for repairs under the terms of a $5.3 million Ford door latch class action settlement.
The Ford door latch class action lawsuit alleged cold weather caused the door latches on certain F-150 pickups to fail. Specifically, the doors would not latch and lock, the plaintiff said.
