  • Who: Ford has recalled more than 30,000 Ford Mustangs.
  • Why: A possible defect can cause the steering wheel to turn without warning when the driver tries to steer the car.
  • Where: The Ford Mustang is available in the United States.ย

Ford has recalled more than 30,000 Ford Mustangs as a possible defect that can cause the steering wheel to oscillate, turning right and left without warning while the driver tries to steer the car.

The recall report was sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on June 28. It applies to 30,735 model year 2022-23 Ford Mustangs.ย

According to the recall, the steering wheel can begin turning on its own alternating clockwise to counterclockwise. This happens because the electronic power steering gear provides unintended steering assistance.ย

โ€œUnintended steering assist can lead to loss of vehicle control while driving, increasing the risk of a crash,โ€ the recall states.ย ย

The steering wheel can oscillate without warning

Ford explains that the issue is caused by a sensor in the steering gear that was calibrated with an โ€œinverted polarity.โ€

โ€œIf the primary steering torque sensor experiences a failure or fault and the secondary digital torque sensorโ€™s polarity is inverted, the steering wheel may begin oscillating without warning โ€ฆ when the driver attempts to steer,โ€ the recall states.ย

As of June 6, Ford was aware of two warranty claims that may be related to the defect. The automaker says no injuries have been reported related to the issue.ย ย

The recall states that owners will be notified by mail by Aug. 12 and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to have the Power Steering Control Module software updated free of charge.

Last month, Ford recalled more than half a million of its F-150 vehicles nationwide due to a transmission issue that can cause them to suddenly shift into first gear.
