Ford has recalled almost 25,000 of its F-250, F-350 and F-450 vehicles due to a rear view camera defect.
The Ford recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Oct. 25. It applies to 24,950 Ford model year 2023-2024 F-250, F-350, and F-450 vehicles.
Each of the affected vehicles are equipped with a camera in the top of the tailgate, the recall says. This tailgate top camera provides additional camera images when the tailgate is down, it explains.
According to the recall, water may enter the Tailgate Park Assist Sensor Interface Module (TPASIM) of the vehicles and cause the rear view camera image to “display intermittently or appear blue or black,” the recall states.
“A rearview camera image that does not display can decrease the driver’s visibility, increasing the risk of injury or crash,” it recall warns.
Ford says drivers might get some indication of the problem through the car’s functionality. They might experience a blue or a black screen tailgate top camera display when the tailgate is down, or they might see a “Reverse Brake Assist Unavailable” message displayed in the cluster.
To fix the issues, dealers will replace the tailgate top camera, wire harness, TPASIM module, and update the image processing software, free of charge, the recall states.
Owners can expect to be notified by mail starting Dec. 9.
In September, Ford Motor Co. recalled certain 2021-2022 models, including Ford Broncos, F-150s, Edges, Explorers and Lincoln Nautiluses and Aviators as the engine intake valve may break while the vehicle is in use, leading to engine failure and loss of power.
