Facebook data privacy settlement overview:

  • Who: Meta Platforms has agreed to pay $725 million to resolve claims it shared Facebook users’ data with third parties without permission and failed to oversee how the data was used.
  • Why: Consumers who used Facebook between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022, are eligible to submit a claim under the terms of class action settlement and must do so by Aug. 25, 2023.
  • Where: Nationwide.

Meta Platforms Inc. has agreed to pay $725 million to resolve claims it shared Facebook users’ data with third parties without permission and failed to properly oversee and control what was done with that data.

The class action settlement will benefit anyone who used Facebook between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022. Individuals who want to submit a valid claim form must do so by Aug. 25, 2023.

Class members can submit claim forms online or by sending the form by U.S. Mail to Facebook Consumer Privacy User Profile Litigation, c/o Settlement Administrator, 1650 Arch Street, Suite 2210, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

If a person does not qualify for this settlement, it is important that they do not file a claim. Claims are submitted under penalty of perjury, and fraudulent claims can harm other class members. Individuals who are unsure about whether they qualify should consult the FAQ section of the administrator’s site to ensure they meet all standards.

Individuals who submit claim forms with incomplete or missing information may be contacted by the settlement administrator, with a deadline to respond with any additional information that is requested.

Submitting a claim form does not guarantee it will be accepted, as it still must be approved by the administrator. Individuals can contact the administrator by email or phone at 1-855-556-2233.

Claim form asks for contact info, U.S. residency confirmation, time period of Facebook use

The claim form will ask for the class member’s contact information, if they resided in the U.S. at any time between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022, and if they were a Facebook user at any time between those same dates.

Consumers must also present an email address, phone number and/or username associated with the Facebook account used between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022.

Each class member will ultimately receive an amount from the settlement that will be calculated based on how many valid claim forms are submitted and how long their Facebook account was used during the class period.

The final hearing for the class action settlement is scheduled for Sept. 7. Individuals who want to opt out of the settlement so they may retain their right to file a complaint against Facebook have until July 26 to do so.

The parties reached the settlement agreement in principle last August, resolving a multidistrict litigation focused on Meta’s alleged role in the Cambridge Analytica data harvesting scandal.
