In fact, many Eliquis bleeding side effects may have devastating results.

Eliquis, known generically as apixaban, was developed by Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb and had a harder-than-normal approval process.

In fact, it was one of the last blood thinners to be approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration.

Eliquis has only been approved by the FDA for uses in three scenarios:

  • To reduce the risk of life-threatening blood clots called systemic embolisms and strokes in patients with irregular heartbeats (or atrial fibrillation).
  • To reduce the risk of blood clots that form in the legs (called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT) and blood clots that form in the lungs (called pulmonary embolisms). These often occur after hip or knee replacement surgery.
  • To treat both pulmonary embolisms and deep vein thromboses.

When Eliquis was approved, it depended on the success of a study called the ARISTOTLE study. ARISTOTLE stands for Apixaban for Reduction in Stroke and Other Thrombotic Events in Atrial Fibrillation.

This study was full of many problems, including an alleged cover-up attempt of unreported serious adverse events as well as patients receiving the wrong medication. Because of these multiple problems, the data from the ARISTOTLE study was reanalyzed.

The FDA had internal disagreement as to the efficacy of Eliquis and made mention of the study’s “pattern of inadequate trial conduct and oversight.”

Within the study, over 18,000 patients were in Asian countries at 36 sites. One of the sites employed a senior clinical manager who worked at 18 locations. He altered records and violated good clinical practice guidelines and was subsequently fired.

Additionally, a significant amount of patient data disappeared from some of the Chinese sites.

One of the benefits of Eliquis is that it does not need constant monitoring like warfarin. Surprisingly however, even though it has been aggressively marketed as safer than older blood thinners, there is no antidote for Eliquis bleeding side effects.

Eliquis and other new generation anticoagulants disrupt the blood clotting process by blocking an enzyme called Factor Xa.  This prevents thrombin from forming in the blood.

As recent as December 2015, Portola Pharmaceuticals applied for approval for an antidote for both Eliquis and Xarelto, another blood thinning medication. In August 2016, the FDA rejected the application.

Eliquis Bleeding Side Effects

Because of the nature of a blood thinner, drugs like Eliquis can often have serious bleeding side effects. When Eliquis is taken concurrently with anti-inflammatory drugs like Aspirin or SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake  inhibitors) the risk for uncontrollable bleeding increases.

Eliquis bleeding side effects include bruising more easily, internal bleeding and brain hemorrhaging. Many Eliquis bleeding side effects are life-threatening.

In 2013, Eliquis reported sales of $146 million and in 2014, Eliquis sales increased to $774 million.
