Consumers are standing up to the makers of Frigidaire and Electrolux microwaves saying that the microwave handles get so hot, they can burn users.
The hot Electrolux microwave handles are not thought to be caused by using the microwave itself, however.
What consumers found was that when they were using the stove under their over-the-range microwave, the heat from cooking could cause the handles to become so hot they could injure users.
As a result, at least two class action lawsuits are underway citing the allegedly defective nature of the Electrolux microwave handles that can cause burns.
Both the Frigidaire and Electrolux models feature the same type of handle that is allegedly responsible for burns.
These class action lawsuits against the makers of the allegedly defective Frigidaire and Electrolux microwave handles state that stainless steel used to manufacture the handles do not have any sort of insulation system to dampen the heat from the stove on the microwave handles.
It’s been estimated that these Frigidaire and Electrolux microwave handles that heat up to very high temperatures have had over 800,000 microwaves sold since 2011.
Underwriters Laboratories is a third-party organization that conducts research and suggests safety standards for various household appliances, such as microwaves, as well as other products. The organization said that the handles should not get hotter than 131°F in order to protect the safety of the user.
Apparently, the Electrolux microwave handles in question can reach up to 168°F, according to the class action lawsuits.
A plaintiff who filed one of the class action lawsuits says that she suffered burns to her hand as a result of the “exceedingly high temperature of the stainless steel handle of the microwave.”
The class action lawsuit alleges that the makers of the Frigidaire and Electrolux microwave handles have been aware of the fact that they can cause burns to users due to their high temperature, but the companies have taken no action in terms of recalling the product or even reimbursing consumers who have asked for a refund on the product so they could purchase a new, safer microwave model.
In response to the allegations, a representative provided a statement, saying, “The safety of our products is our top priority and if consumers ever have any concerns about their products, we encourage them to reach out to us.”
