Unum long term disability insurance doctor stethoscopeA doctor recently filed a long-term disability insurance lawsuit against Unum Life Insurance Company of America, accusing the company of wrongfully denying his legitimate claims for disability benefits.

According to the Unum LTD insurance lawsuit, plaintiff John C., a licensed physician, became unable to perform his occupation as a pediatrician on Mar. 1, 2016.

Due to his disability, John says he left his medical practice. He alleges that along with his submission for long-term disability benefits claim, he sent in “ample evidence” proving his disability.

According to the Unum LTD insurance lawsuit, although Unum initially began paying his benefits, they later denied his insurance benefits in a letter dated Apr. 28, 2017.

John alleges that he later attempted to appeal Unum’s decision in denying his LTD benefits, but the company denied his appeal on Oct. 26, 2017.

Filing an Unum LTD Insurance Lawsuit Over a Denied Claim for Benefits

Unum Life Insurance Company of America is one of the largest disability insurance companies in the United States. The insurance giant is a Fortune 500 insurance company based in Chattanooga, Tenn., and operates in centers around the U.S. such as Tennessee, Maine, Massachusetts, and South Carolina.

However, a growing number of consumers are filing Unum LTD insurance lawsuits alleging the company of unfairly denying their benefits. Plaintiffs claim bad faith practices have been reportedly carried out by Unum ranging from the company’s underpayment of insurance benefits, unreasonable delays in claim processing, and unfounded denial of insurance claims.

Some Unum LTD insurance lawsuits further claim the insurance giant purposely denies the insurance benefits of hundreds of disabled workers for no reason other than to increase company revenue.

Filing an Unum LTD insurance lawsuit is sometimes a last resort for policyholders who have exhausted all remedies through appeals and applications for denied disability benefits. Plaintiffs hope that by filing a denied claim of benefits lawsuit they can reverse their insurance denials from Unum.

Bad faith practices carried out by Unum were reported in 2002 by 60 Minutes.

Former employees and physicians of the company claimed that one of the company’s goals was to not only close out claims but to reward adjusters if a consumer’s disability benefits were denied.

Journalists also interveiwed a former physician for Unum who claimed that he was fired for allegedly refusing to deny consumer disability insurance benefits and for refusing to cooperate with the company.

After these issues were exposed during the 60 Minutes segment, a Regulatory Settlement Agreement, in 2004, was signed between Unum and 40 states due to the company’s mishandling of long-term disability benefits.

Unum also entered an agreement with the California Department of Insurance in 2005, also pertaining to allegations of wrongful handling of consumer’s long-term disability benefits.

John’s Unum LTD Insurance Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-01890-YY, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon.
