Iowa Residents File Class Action Over Bed Bugs
By Sarah Pierce
Iowa residents may be sleeping tight, but they’re not being protected from bed bug bites.
According to the Des Moines Register, more than 250 people have suffered “unconscionable and substandard living conditions” at two Des Moines apartment complexes that are infested with bed bugs. Residents have filed a class action lawsuit, alleging that the infestation has scarred their bodies, attacked their health, and left them with less and less furniture — but that management continuously fails to properly address the problem. Both complexes house a large number of elderly and disabled residents who are unable to fix the problem themselves.
The lawsuit, which falls under Iowa’s new consumer protection law, demands $7.4 million in damages, pain and suffering, rent overcharges and replacement of infested belongings. This number does not include lawyer fees.
