Current GMC Sierra recalls are part of the massive recall of Takata airbags, which the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has characterized as “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history.” At issue is a cartridge holding what is supposed to be just enough explosive energy to inflate airbags in the case of a deadly collision.
In reality, the GMC Sierra recalls and others affecting 19 different automakers were instituted by the Takata company because the airbag inflators – metal boxes containing propellant – could injure or possibly even kill vehicle occupants.
When these cartridges deploy, the force is so intense that the boxes would send metal shrapnel throughout the interior of the car, possibly resulting in death. Domestically, it has been determined that 11 deaths and 180 injuries varying in degree have been linked to this problem.
NHTSA has isolated ammonium nitrate propellant as a key factor in the airbag’s failure. Evidently, this type of propellant was used without enough drying agent.
The recipe for disaster is further fed with high humidity and temperatures and aging of the vehicle/airbags. The Takata airbag inflator which led to GMC Sierra recalls and recalls of vehicles having the same airbag is believed to affect at least 65 to 70 million airbags.
The GMC Sierra recalls affected the HD model years 2010 to 2014 and the LD model years 2010 to 2013. Other GMC vehicles affected by the Takata airbag inflator problem is the Yukon and Yukon XL. Both versions of the Yukon affected by the recall are model years 2010 to 2014.
Other than the GMC Yukon and GMC Sierra recalls, the other make, model, and years included in this expansive safety action include many vehicles listed below. This is not a comprehensive list as the recall is growing all the time.
