CountrywideThe Federal Trade Commission announced last month that it is mailing out refund checks to 200,000 American homeowners who were charged excessive fees in their mortgages by Countrywide Home Loans.

The FTC sued Countrywide last year for using unfair and deceptive practices while servicing the mortgages of homeowners in default or Chapter 13 bankruptcy.

According to the Countrywide lawsuit, the lender “abused” and overcharged 200,000 struggling homeowners who fell behind on their mortgage payments. These abuses included:

– charging excessive fees for default-related services like property inspections;

– making claims about amounts owed by homeowners in bankruptcy that were false or couldn’t be backed up; and

– not telling people going through bankruptcy when new fees or charges were being added to their loans.

The FTC Countrywide settlement will provide $108 million in refunds to homeowners who were charged inappropriate fees or were victims of false statements made in bankruptcy court.

The Countrywide refund checks began going out in late July 2011. Eligible homeowners will automatically receive a check in the mail. However, if you have moved, you can submit your change of address in writing to:

    Me and my mother purchased a house in 1998 and stayed in the house until 2013 after we were told that we did not own the house any more and the sheriff was coming to put us out. We never received a notice about a class action suit or any other thing about the company treating people unfair. We are in Jacksonville, FL and we are widowed black ladies. I think we were totally discriminated against. We have no money or did we have monies to hire a lawyer.

    In 2009 my wife and I had issues with Countrywide also during the takeover from BOA I wrote them, I paid them and I still lost our home with a new baby and to this day I still am haunted from it. I received a small check for settlement and I don’t even know where it was from, I am trying to get information on the settlement because we after all these years are now trying to get a home and the lender wants the information on our settlement. Both my wife’s family and mine helped us with letter writing, sending thousands of dollars to keep the home but in the end, it ruined my credit which to this day is keeping us from home owning. If anyone has contact information on the settlement I have made several calls to be told that it wasn’t BOA, it wasn’t the discrimination case and it wasn’t the countrywide who paid me???? so help me if you know any information I need it asap to help me my wife and our kids purchase a home after all these years for a new respectful lender! That year, that situation brings many heartaches but we have tried to move on, and now it’s still haunting us—please forward any information you might have on the pay outs they did in 2011 – 2012. I and my family thank you for helping and reading and I’m sorry we all have gone through such a mess, it’s a shame. Thank you, desperating seeking my payor for my credit lender!

    I was a victim of the Countrywide mortgage scandal. Not only did they sell my loan, I was also a victim of identity theft. I am still in the home and did not get a refund check or a letter. What can I do?

  8. Tonya Gulley says:

    Never got a refund thinking back as to how my first home experience was crushed due to my rates increasing and they knew in the beginning I was already a candidate for default still upsets me to this day. I just heard on CNN that BOA bought Countrywide Loans and has to pay back 1.27 Billion dollars and came up on this website. I hope I get something back for all the pain and suffering they put me through. #Stillscarred
