Antibiotics have been the savior of mankind in the last century as they have been used to treat a variety of infections and illness. However, there is such a wide variety that there is now concern that they are used to treat too many health problems. A result of using the antibiotic too often is the creation of a type of drug-resistant bacteria. In turn, this causes a patient to be susceptible to more severe infections that could have otherwise been treatable had the patient not built up the drug-resistant bacteria via antibiotics.
In addition to creating drug-resistant bacteria, antibiotics have been known to be downright deadly. There are an estimated 20,000 people that die yearly from complications due to antibiotics. Negative symptoms have included severe allergic reactions and diarrhea.
Drug companies have created antibiotics that cover a broad range of infections. For example, drug manufacturer Pfizer created Zithromax as the generic “go-to” drug to treat almost every illness, but in reality Zithromax should have only been used to treat the most severe infections.
Though doctors are responsible for prescribing antibiotics, they are not the source of the problem. Popular drug companies have done a great job at spending money to persuade both doctors and patients via marketing strategies; this has resulted in a multi-billion dollar industry, but with troubling concerns for patients. Pfizer is just one example of selling both doctors and patients on their popular antibiotic after spending millions on marketing campaigns.
Addressing the Problem
So what is being done to address this problem? The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has begun to advise hospitals on prescribing, monitoring, and tracking antibiotics more carefully. After being exposed to Choosing Wisely, a program aimed at reducing unnecessary medical care after almost a dozen medical groups identified numerous situations where antibiotics were misused, physicians have even recognized their overuse of antibiotic prescription. Antibiotics were found to be used to treat petty health concerns such as the common cold, sinusitis, and ear infections.
In addition to the CDC raising concern, Zithromax class action lawsuits and individual lawsuits have been filed. The Zithromax class action lawsuits have included allegations that as a direct result of Zithromax, they suffered injuries such as: heart attack, Stevens Johnson Syndrome, liver failure, and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.
