Chrysler is recalling more than 80,000 year-model 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and year-model 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles due to a defect in the rear coil springs that could potentially lead to crashes.
The recall notice was issued Jan. 29 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada. The affected models include approximately 29,139 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 51,481 Jeep Grand Cherokee L vehicles.
The issue stems from the rear coil springs being incorrectly installed, which could result in them detaching while the vehicle is in motion, posing a significant safety risk. According to the Jeep recall, Chrysler estimates that only 0.5% of the vehicles are impacted by this defect.
“The rear coil springs in the vehicles may be incorrectly installed and detach while driving, which could result in a crash,” the Jeep recall states.
Chrysler has received 20 customer assistance records and 284 warranty claims related to this defect but had not reported any accidents or injuries as of Feb. 3.
Chrysler to provide free repairs throughout its dealerships
The NHTSA had previously opened a probe into a similar issue involving Jeep vehicles, indicating a recurring problem with rear coil spring installations.
Chrysler has committed to notifying vehicle owners by Feb. 12 and will offer repairs at no cost through its dealerships. In Canada, FCA Canada will also notify owners and advise them to visit a dealership for inspection and necessary repairs.
For more information, affected vehicle owners can contact Fiat Chrysler Automobiles U.S. customer service at 1-800-853-1403 or visit the NHTSA website using the recall number 23V413. The Transport Canada ID is 2026037.
Chrysler says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the Jeep Grand Cherokee recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
In November, Chrysler recalled more than 320,000 Jeep Wrangler 4xe models and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid SUVs in the US and Canada due to a potential fire hazard associated with the high-voltage battery pack.
