The Chrysler 300 Takata airbag recall is part of a larger initiative to recall millions of vehicles with allegedly defective airbags.
Several automobile manufacturers recalled their vehicles containing Takata ammonium nitrate-propelled airbags, which can deteriorate over time due to humidity and high temperatures. Under these circumstances, these Takata airbags have been reported to explode and cause injuries to both drivers and passengers.
To prevent further consumer injuries, the Chrysler 300 Takata airbag recall was initiated, recalling Chrysler 300 vehicles years 2010 to 2015.
According to a Consumer Reports article, 19 different automakers have recalled their vehicles to replace driver and passenger frontal Takata airbags. The report also stated that roughly 180 injuries and 11 deaths were caused by the allegedly defective Takata airbags. Takata has since filed bankruptcy.
Automakers are now “disputing charges that they knowingly installed the defective airbags in their cars.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that the Takata airbag recall initiative is “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. History.” Car companies involved in the Takata airbag recall include Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Jeep, Mercedes Benz, and Chrysler. Over 34 million cars have been recalled as part of the Takata airbag initiative, which has been going on for the past several years.
Along with the airbags excessive force of impact, upon deployment metal shrapnel is sent throughout the car that could potentially cause a roadside accident. The Chrysler 300 Takata airbag recall was issued to minimize the chances of injury to the car owners and potentially other vehicles.
Overview of Chrysler 300 Takata Airbag Recall
The Takata airbag explosions are caused by the airbag inflator, which is supposed to deploy with just the right amount of force upon impact to keep passengers safe. The airbag inflator is a propellant filled metal cartridge. The propellant is made from ammonium nitrate, which is the same chemical compound used in bombs. According to reports, the alleged defective airbags have been exploding due to the ammonium nitrate degrading.
While deterioration can occur over time, it is reportedly made worse with humidity and high temperatures. Additionally, it is alleged that these airbags do not contain sufficient drying agent. The drying agent works to counteract the moisture issues that can cause the propellant to break down. The breakdown of the propellant ultimately causes the airbag to act like a bomb, rather than an inflation device.
After the Takata airbag recall became public knowledge, many consumers affected by the Chrysler 300 Takata airbag began asking how long their respective automobile companies knew about the allegedly defective airbags. Many critics allege that Chrysler failed to warn customers of the potential problem.
Additionally, Chrysler reportedly lacks the parts necessary to fix the airbag problem. Consumers also complained the company did not provide them with alternative transportation while their vehicles were being fixed.
