Studies suggest long term Dilantin side effects may greatly impact patients’ lives, as serious brain impairment can be potentially induced.
Dilantin (Phenytoin) has been linked to the serious complication that is cerebral atrophy, which is either the focal or generalized degeneration of the brain.
In the case of focal cerebral atrophy, the cerebellum is slowly broken down and causes permanent speech and movement impairments in the patient.
Dilantin side effects have reportedly been linked to cerebellar toxicity for the past several years, but studies of this alleged correlation date back all the way back to the 1990s.
Dilantin was first approved by the FDA in the 1950s, to treat a variety of epileptic conditions including Tourette’s syndrome, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and other mental disorders.
Since its release, Dilantin has become one of the well recognized anti-epileptic medications in the country and has been prescribed to millions of patients.
However there are a number of severe Dilantin side effects patients have reported throughout the years including:
- Bone Weakness
- Gingival Hyperplasia (Overgrowth of the gums)
- Nerve Damage (Particularly in the patients’ legs)
- Other Long-Term Side Effects (Including cerebral atrophy)
Dilantin Side Effects and Cerebral Atrophy Correlation
The association between cerebral atrophy and long term Dilantin side effects was first observed in 1994, when a study had analyzed the effects phenytoin had on the brain.
Scientists noted phenytoin patients had significantly smaller cerebelli compared to non exposed patients, and that the cerebellar damage was more severe in patients who were prescribed heavier doses or were on long term prescriptions.
Later studies have produced similar results, with one 2003 study examining the MRIs of phenytoin patients.
In addition, several potential cases of Dilantin cerebral atrophy have been submitted to the FDA.
It is important to note that cerebral atrophy is an incurable condition, which results in permanent damage to the patient’s ability to move and speak.
The cerebellum is primarily responsible for coordination and speech, so early intervention is vital to contain the damage.
Cerebral atrophy symptoms phenytoin patients should look out for include:
- Jerky movements of the arms and legs
- Unsteady gait
- Slowed or slurred speech
- Nystagmus (uncontrolled rapid eye movement)
Patients who experience these symptoms or other unexpected Dilantin side effects, should report to their physicians immediately.
Even though cerebral atrophy may be linked to long term Dilantin side effects, Pfizer Inc. and other generic manufacturing companies allegedly failed to warn patients.
Patients who may have experienced Dilantin cerebral atrophy may be able to file legal action against the manufacturing company, and should contact a specialized lawyer to determine eligibility.
In general, phenytoin lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
