Blue Diamond Almond Breeze almond milk is a popular option for those who avoid or are allergic to cow’s milk. Unfortunately, a batch of the company’s vanilla flavored Almond Breeze was recently contaminated by cow’s milk, affecting thousands of half-gallon containers across 28 states.
If you purchased Blue Diamond’s Vanilla Almond Breeze almond milk in one of the affected states, and it has a use-by date of Sept. 2, 2018, you may be able to join an almond milk recall lawsuit investigation.
Contamination with Cow’s Milk Leads to Almond Milk Recall
The maker of Blue Diamond Vanilla Almond Breeze almond milk, HP Hood, announced its almond milk recall due to contamination with cow’s milk on Aug. 2, 2018. Around 150,000 half-gallons of the product were affected in the recall in 28 states. All affected packages have a use-by date of Sept. 2, 2018.
Why is the contamination with cow’s milk a big deal? Many people who buy almond milk may be unable to tolerate or are allergic to cow’s milk, an issue which for some people can be serious or even life-threatening. Plus, cow’s milk is not included as an allergen on the label of this almond milk.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration made the severity of milk allergy clear. “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” wrote the FDA in an announcement.
According to an HP Hood representative, the almond milk was contaminated with dairy milk because both products are handled at the same plant.
“Although the almond milk is processed on a separate line and filler and we confirmed that the allergen control protocol all standard validation testing was conducted in accordance with our allergen control program, this particular batch of almond milk was contaminated with one container of milk through an employee error,” said the representative to CBS News through an email. “Hood made the decision to recall all of the product from this batch as a precaution”
The contaminated product was sent to the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
