BMW and Toyota are recalling nearly 87,400 vehicles due to a potential fire risk associated with the engine starter.
The recall impacts various BMW models, including the 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X4, and Z4, as well as the Toyota Supra, which shares a powertrain developed with BMW’s Z4.
The recall was officially published Jan. 30, 2026, and affects BMW models from the years 2021 to 2024, and Toyota Supra models from 2021 to 2023.
According to Transport Canada, the engine starter in these vehicles may not have been manufactured properly, which could result in overheating.
“A starter that overheats can create the risk of a fire,” the BMW recall notice says.
Car owners should take precautions until fix is available
The recall notice advises vehicle owners to take precautions until the necessary repairs are made.
“To reduce the safety risk, BMW recommends not using the remote start function and not leaving the vehicle unattended with the engine running until the recall repairs have been completed,” the BMW recall says.
BMW and Toyota have committed to replacing the faulty engine starters at no cost to the vehicle owners. Owners of the affected models will receive notifications by mail starting March 24, 2026, instructing them to bring their vehicles to authorized dealerships for the necessary repairs.
