BMW recall overview:

  • Who: BMW is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles, including certain Toyota Supra models.
  • Why: The recall was issued because of a potential fire risk caused by a corroding starter relay that may overheat and short-circuit.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United States.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and BMW of North America have issued a special consumer alert for almost 200,000 vehicles, including certain Toyota Supra models, due to a potential fire hazard linked to a corroding starter relay.

The recall was announced by BMW and detailed by the NHTSA on Sept. 26. It affects several models, including the 2019-2022 Z4, 2019-2021 330I, 2020-2022 X3, 2020-2022 X4, 2020-2022 530I, 2021-2022 430I (both standard and convertible) and the 2022 230I. Additionally, 1,469 Toyota Supra vehicles from 2020-2022, manufactured by BMW, are also part of this recall.

The issue arises from the engine starter relay, which may corrode, leading to overheating and a short circuit, potentially causing a fire.

“Owners should park outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until they either confirm their vehicle is not subject to the recall or have their vehicle remedied,” the recall notice states.

This precaution is crucial as the corroded starter relay poses a significant fire risk whether the vehicle is parked or in motion.

BMW to recall affected vehicles in phases, recall notice states

The BMW fire risk recall will be conducted in phases due to the availability of parts, with initial notification letters scheduled to be mailed to affected owners on Nov. 14.

Owners are encouraged to check their vehicle identification numbers (VINs) on the NHTSA website starting Nov. 14 to determine if their vehicle is included in the recall.

Alternatively, they can contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417 for further assistance or the NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or download the SaferCar app to stay informed on current recalls.

BMW says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Meanwhile, BMW is facing a class action lawsuit over claims it knowingly sold vehicles with defective electrical connectors on the water pumps that can pose a potential fire risk.
