BMW recall overview:

  • Who: BMW has announced it will recall more than 291,000 vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was launched due to BMW rear crash issues related to faulty bolts that may potentially detach and pose a risk of injury in an accident.
  • Where: The BMW recall applies nationwide.

BMW rear crash issues led the automaker to recall more than 291,000 vehicles, CBS News reports.

The issue is reportedly caused by faulty bolts on certain BMW vehicles that “may become damaged in a rear crash and result in the cargo rail detaching,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The following 2018-2023 vehicle models are affected by the BMW recall:

  • X3 sDrive30i
  • X3 xDrive30i
  • X3 M40i
  • X3 M

The NHTSA said BMW rear crash issues in the recalled vehicles may increase the risk of drivers and passengers being injured in an accident.

Forbes reported that the automaker first learned about the potential BMW rear crash issues in August 2022. An “extreme rear crash” involved one of the affected models. The automaker inspected and tested the affected vehicle to identify the source of the issue.
