BMW of North America is recalling more than 720,000 vehicles in the United States as the water pump connector in them may short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

The recall was published to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website on Aug. 13, 2024.ย

It applies to certain 2012-2015 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, 2012-2016 Z4 sDrive28i, 528i, 528i xDrive, 328i, 328xi, 2016-2018 X5 xdrive 40e, 2014-2016 228i, 228xi, 428i, 428i xDrive, 328xi Gran Turismo, 2013-2017 X3 sDrive28i, X3 xDrive28i, 2015-2018 X4 xDrive28i, 2015-2016 428xi vehicles.ย ย

Insufficient sealing leads to water exposure

According to the BMW recall, the vehicles may have been manufactured with a water pump that, due to insufficient sealing, could over time become susceptible to fluid ingress at the electrical plug connector.ย

An improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit.

โ€œThis could increase the risk of a thermal event and, in rare cases, a fire,โ€ the recall says.ย

Dealers will inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector as necessary, and install a protective shield, free of charge, BMW says. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Oct. 4, 2024.ย

This is not the only BMW recall to be announced in August. BMW of North America also issued another recall for more than 105,000 of its vehicles over concerns their starter motor could overheat, posing a fire risk. That recall involves certain model year 2019-2020 X5, X7, 2020 3 Series Sedan, X6, 2020-2021 7 Series Sedan, 2020 8 Series Convertible, 8 Series Coupe and 2020 8 Series Gran Coupe vehicles.
