Benadryl unsafe packaging recall overview:

  • Who: The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for Benadryl Liquid Elixir, 100 mL bottles.
  • Why: The Benadryl recall was initiated over concerns that the packaging is not child-resistant, as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act.
  • Where: The Benadryl packaging recall has been issued for all products purchased through Amazon.com in the United States.

A nationwide recall has been issued for around 2,300 bottles of Benadryl Liquid Elixir 100 mL bottles sold from July 2023 through October 2024 on Amazon.com for between $16 and $19.

The recall was issued on March 20 due to a lack of child-resistant packaging, as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act. The medicine contains diphenhydramine, which poses a risk of poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children, according to the CPSC.

This recall involves Benadryl Liquid Elixir sold in a round dark plastic bottle with a pink and white label on the front with the word “Benadryl” in blue text.

It was packaged in a pink and white paper box with the word “Benadryl” written in blue text. The package has a white label on the bottom with the following code written in black text: “X003VRIGUL.”

Consumers should immediately secure recalled Benadryl out of sight of children

The Benadryl unsafe packaging recall urges all parents, adults or legal guardians to immediately secure the recalled Benadryl out of the sight and reach of children.

Consumers who bought the product should contact Arsell, the importer of Benadryl, for a full refund. They are asked to submit their Amazon order numbers, along with a photo showing disposal of the recalled bottle, to [email protected].

Only the bottle is being recalled, not the medicine itself, but both should be disposed of. All known purchasers are being contacted directly.

For further inquiries, contact Arsell directly at [email protected] or fill out the Recall Complaint Form if no response is received.

Arsell says it has not received any reports of illness or injury related to the Benadryl recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

In other unsafe packaging reports, Hershey Co. is facing a class action lawsuit alleging that the packaging for several of its popular chocolate products contains harmful “forever chemicals,” known as PFAS.
