A recent Audi airbag recall has affected a number of Audi models. The Audi airbag recall was issued due to defective airbags that can cause injury or death.
If you either own or lease a vehicle involved in the Audi airbag recall, you may be able to join in a defective airbag class action lawsuit. Joining a class action lawsuit can result in some compensation for either injuries or loss of value.
Audi Airbag Recall Basics
The Audi airbag recall came after the Takata airbags in certain Audi vehicles were found to be defective, placing drivers and their passengers at risk of injury or even death. According to the Audi airbag recall, the affected cars’ front airbags can explode. Some of these incidents have reportedly caused horrible injuries and even killed both the driver and front passenger.
These dangerous defects has been linked with the airbag inflator, a device that is designed to inflate quickly upon activation. The airbag inflator includes a metal cartridge with propellant. While airbags are supposed to inflate rapidly, the defective Takata airbags involved in this Audi airbag recall explode much too forcefully.
Indeed, instead of inflating to provide cushion and save lives, these airbags can explode with enough force to eject and rupture the metal cartridge, sending shrapnel throughout the vehicle. Passengers may be hit with flying metal shards.
Regulators of these devices note that these airbags are supposed to have a drying agent to control the force with which the airbags deploy. But they purportedly don’t have enough of this drying agent, and the bags are essentially allowed to explode.
Takata has already been targeted in a number of defective airbag lawsuits, and has also been hit with significant fines. These issues have become so extreme that the company recently filed for bankruptcy.
Problems with these Takata airbags have been known for quite some time. The Audi airbag recall, however, is more recent. In delaying the Audi airbag recall, Audi may have failed to give its customers timely notification about these serious risks. The automaker also reportedly lacks important parts necessary to repair vehicles affected by the Audi airbag recall.
Audi had initially announced a recall that only included vehicles made between 2002 and 2015. Recently, the company expanded its Audio airbag recall to include certain 2016 and 2017 models as well. The Audi airbag recall now also includes a few older models.
If you own an Audi vehicle involved in the Audi airbag recall, you may be able to file an Audi class action lawsuit.
