Apple class action lawsuitApple customers who participated in a class action lawsuit settlement last year over iPhone and iPod warranty repairs will finally be seeing payments in the mail soon, according to the Settlement Administrator.

The Apple warranty settlement resolves allegations raised in multiple class action lawsuits (consolidated as In re Apple iPhone/iPod Warranty Litigation) that claimed Apple knowingly used a faulty liquid detection tape in iPhone and iPod devices that falsely indicated water damage even when there was none. Plaintiffs accused Apple of knowing that the tape could be triggered by humidity and temperature changes, but refused to investigate the true cause of the malfunction so that it could deny warranty coverage and force customers to purchase a new or refurbished iPhone or iPod.

Apple denied the allegations but agreed to a $53 million class action settlement in April 2013 to resolve the litigation.

Under the deal, Apple customers who tried to repair or replace their iPhone on or before Dec. 31, 2009, or tried to repair or replace their iPod Touch device on or before June 30, 2010, and were denied based on Apple’s former Liquid Damage Policy, could claim cash payments of between $105 and $300 from the Apple warranty class action settlement.

The deadline to file a claim was Oct. 21, 2013.

On May 8, 2014, a federal Court granted final approval to the Apple iPhone/iPod warranty settlement. Settlement Administrator Kurtzman Carson Consultants (KCC, LLC) posted the following update to the Apple warranty settlement website:

“The settlement is now final and, in the next several weeks, the Settlement Administrator is expecting to begin distributing settlement checks. If you need to update your mailing address, please click here.”

I received a check today for $149.00. They denied the warranty on my Itouch (the home button had stopped working) and they said it was because of water damage. I take good care of all my phones/ipods/ipads, etc. I had never dropped it on floor, in water, etc. I was extremely pissed off when they told me no repair/replacement. I am glad I put in for this. I no longer use the Itouch, but I do have an Ipad mini…I’ll consider that went toward the purchase price!
