A Missouri resident recently filed an Invokana diabetic ketoacidosis lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals, alleging the drug caused serious and damaging injuries.
According to the plaintiff, Nathan W., he began taking Invokana to treat diabetes at the direction of his doctor in September 2013, and continued to do so until around July 2014.
As a result, the lawsuit claims, the plaintiff suffered diabetic ketoacidosis.
The Invokana diabetic ketoacidosis lawsuit claims that Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, either knew or should have known about the serious risks associated with the use of their drug.
However, the lawsuit claims, Janssen continued to market the drug as safe and effective, defending it against allegations of risk, and actively misled consumers and the medical community by concealing and minimizing information about the Invokana diabetic ketoacidosis side effect.
This is just the most recent of the growing number of Invokana diabetic ketoacidosis lawsuits.
Invokana Background
Invokana (cangliflozin) was first approved and introduced in 2013. Invokana is one of several diabetes drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, a relatively new class of diabetes drugs.
After its release onto the diabetes drug market, Invokana quickly rose in popularity, after aggressive marketing tactics by Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
However, since its release, the FDA has received a growing number of adverse event reports regarding the drug, and has required Janssen to add a series of warnings to the Invokana warning label.
The warning urged users to be aware of diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms like abdominal pain, fatigue, nausea, respiratory problems, and vomiting.
While in some cases, ketoacidosis problems can be counteracted by simply stopping intake of diabetes drugs, the FDA warns that changing or stopping diabetes drugs without a doctor’s approval can be dangerous.
According to a recent study published in the medical journal Diabetes Care, Invokana can slightly increase the risk of ketoacidosis.
Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition caused by high acid levels in the blood. Diabetic ketoacidosis can result in some serious symptoms, including:
- Difficulty breathing
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Confusion
- Fatigue
- Sleepiness
These diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms can often require urgent medical treatment, and can even result in major health problems.
Though the increased risk is fairly low, the condition can result in severe health complications, even involving emergency hospital treatment.
Filing an Invokana Diabetic Ketoacidosis Lawsuit
Many consumers, amid the FDA warnings and recent studies, are pursuing Invokana lawsuits.
These plaintiffs allege that the drug maker failed to adequately warn about potential Invokana side effects, including diabetic ketoacidosis.
These Invokana diabetic ketoacidosis lawsuits claim that the drug makers actively withheld information about the drug’s risks from both the medical community and the general public.
Some of these Invokana lawsuits claim that the potential Invokana risks, including diabetic ketoacidosis, may outweigh the benefits.
Plaintiffs involved in these Invokana lawsuits hope to gain some kind of financial compensation.
If you or someone you love has suffered from significant side effects, including diabetic ketoacidosis, from Invokana, you may be able to file an Invokana diabetic ketoacidosis lawsuit.
While filing a lawsuit cannot reverse the side effects of Invokana, pursuing an Invokana lawsuit could result in financial compensation that would help with medical expenses and lost wages.
The Invokana Diabetic Ketoacidosis Lawsuit is Case No. 3:16-cv-04136, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Trenton Division.
In general, Invokana lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
