Aloprim, generically known as allopurinol for injection, is a drug mainly used to treat gout.
However, what is not widely known is that some patients develop a serious Aloprim skin reaction known as Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
Allopurinol is a drug that counteracts high levels of uric acid in the body. It is prescribed to treat gout, erosive destructive gouty joint disease, uric acid deposits in tissues, gouty kidney disease and uric acid stones.
It can also be prescribed to cancer patients who are soon undergoing chemotherapy.
Aloprim has been found to help in the treatment of certain cancers and in patients with recurrent kidney stones and elevated uric acid levels.
However, allopurinol has a strong link to a Aloprim skin reaction known as Stevens Johnson Syndrome, or Allopurinol SJS.
SJS: Aloprim Skin Reaction
One serious and life-threatening side effect that can occur while taking allopurinol is an Aloprim side effect known as Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
SJS usually occurs in response to medication and is an autoimmune reaction. The Aloprim skin reaction, SJS, begins with flu-like symptoms and a rash on the body. It then progresses to brightly colored skin lesions and cell death.
SJS causes the epidermis to separate from the dermis and also attacks the mucous membranes including the eyes and mouth.
Permanent scarring and blindness may occur, usually in conjunction with eye infections that often accompany SJS. Other SJS complications include corneal blisters and holes.
Sadly, SJS can lead to a much worse condition called Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, or TEN. TEN is like SJS but it covers a greater portion of the body.
Both SJS and TEN must be treated as emergencies as they are both life-threatening conditions.
Patients who develop the Aloprim skin reaction, SJS, must usually be treated in a hospital’s burn ward to focus on controlling symptoms and minimizing complications.
Both SJS and TEN can be fatal if not treated quickly. Recovery for patients can take weeks up to months.
Aloprim Skin Reaction Study Results
One recent study from Harvard Medical School found the risks for Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis are higher among certain racial groups.
They found that Asians and Blacks were at a much higher risk for developing SJS or TEN with allopurinol use than Whites or Hispanics.
A similar study in New Zealand found the same risks among the Chinese population it studied.
