The involved automakers and models are: Cadillac, which includes the 2010-2014 Escalade, 2010-2014 Escalade ESV, and the 2010-2013 Escalade EXT; Chevrolet vehicles including the 2010-2013 Avalance, 2010-2014 Silverado HD, 2010-2013 Silverado HD, 2010-2013 Silverado LD, 2010-2014 Suburban, and 2010-2014 Tahoe.

Other automakers affected by the recent recall include GMC, with affected vehicles such as the 2010-2014 Sierra HD models, 2010-2013 Sierra LD, 2010-2014 Yukon, and 2010-2014 Yukon XL.

The Chrysler 2010-2015 300 is also one of the affected vehicles, as well as the 2010-2014 Dodge Challenger, 2010-2015 Dodge Charger, and the 2010-2011 Dodge Dakota.

The 2010-2016 Jeep Wrangler is further affected by the recent recall as are models from Mercedes Benz, which include: 2005- 2014 Mercedes- Benz C-Class, 2010-2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, 2011-2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabrio, 2010-2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, 2009-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, 2010-2015 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, 2009-2010-Mercedes-Benz ML-Class, 2009-2012 Mercedes-Benz R-Class, 2007-2008 Mercedes-Benz SLK- Class, and the 2011-2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS-Class.

These vehicles affected by the recent recall, including the airbag recall for Cadillac, are being recalled because they contain a Takata-made ammonium nitrate airbag, one which has been reported to degrade and rupture over time.

Airbag Recall for Cadillac

Takata, an automotive parts company headquartered in Japan, has issued the recall to several manufacturing companies due to a defect located in the airbags.

The airbag recall for Cadillac, and that affecting these other automotive manufacturing companies are allegedly due to the front airbags which have been reported to explode, injuring both passengers and drivers in these vehicles.

Regulators have identified that the issue in the Takata airbags is tied to the airbag’s inflator, which consists of a metal cartridge and is loaded with propellant. The problem is that not only does inflator quickly inflate when activated, as it is manufactured to do; it is also at risk of exploding with such a huge magnitude of force that the metal cartridge holding the propellant ruptures. The metal cartridge then sends metal shrapnel flying throughout a vehicle, injuring persons in its path.

According to reports, the propellant is made up of ammonium nitrate, a chemical also used in the manufacturing of bombs. Under normal situations, when the airbag doesn’t explode with so much force, this chemical should only be included in the airbag in just the right amount to deploy in an emergency situation.

However, reports say the problem causing the airbag recall for Cadillac does not include enough of a drying agent within its airbags. This drying agent is used to allow the airbags to deploy with the right amount of force.
