Apple iPhone slow down throttlingAt least nine class action lawsuits have already been filed against tech giant Apple Inc., alleging that the company deliberately performed an iPhone slowdown on older models of their phones in their software updates—without disclosing this information to customers.

Basics of the iPhone Slowdown

These iPhone slowdown lawsuits allege that Apple uses system updates to throttle its old iPhone models, which slows down their ability to process as the battery gets older.

Consumers and tech writers alike have suspected this practice for some time, noticing that their phones were getting slower over time. Conversely, when some owners replaced their old battery for a new one, they found that their phones started working faster once again.

But it is not just suspicion and conjecture that has led to the growing number of class action lawsuits.

A report published on Dec. 18 shows a link between iPhone performance, battery age, and system updates, supporting the theory of the iPhone slowdown. Then, just a few days later, Apple openly admitted that it had implemented a recent system update to older iPhones that slowed them down.

The company had done so knowingly, it admitted, in an attempt to prevent the phone from shutting down unexpectedly. The change was intended to demand less power and give longer battery life, but it also apparently affected the performance speed of the phones as well. According to Apple, the iPhone slowdown affected the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, and iPhone 7.

Some consumers claim that Apple’s reason for the iPhone slowdown was not to extend battery life, but rather to encourage customers to upgrade to a newer iPhone by making their current phone slower and less appealing.

iPhone Slowdown Lawsuits

At least nine class action lawsuits have so far been filed over the iPhone slowdown issue, filed in U.S. district courts in California, New York, and Illinois. The lawsuits allege that Apple should have been far more transparent about its iPhone slowdown practice, and that its failure to disclose this practice may have led customers to purchase new iPhones instead of simply purchasing a new battery. In some cases, a new iPhone could have cost $1,000 compared with a much cheaper battery replacement.
