Honda Civic Owners Fume over Electric Parking Brake ProblemMore Honda Civic owners are coming forward to lodge complaints about an electric parking brake problem.

The problem, addressed in a 2016 recall, is that the electronic parking brakes in some models of Honda Civics may fail, allowing the car to roll away when it is in park. Honda Civics that roll away when the parking brakes fail may cause significant property damage as well as injuries.

More than 350,000 Honda Civics were originally recalled in October 2016, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announcement. The primary issue in the electric parking brake problem was traced to software in the vehicle stability assist control unit. Allegedly, if the driver attempted to apply the electronic parking brake immediately after the ignition is turned off, the software might prevent the parking brake from engaging.

The recall applied only to Civics from model year 2016. But some owners allege that the defect affects 2017 and 2018 models as well.

A Honda class action lawsuit regarding the electric parking brake problem with Honda vehicles has already been filed, alleging that the car’s gear shifters were defectively designed. Two lessees who report experiencing the electric parking brake problem allege that Honda deviated from their standard design for the gear shifter.

It’s possible that the gear shifter is returning to the center position after being engaged, causing drivers to have little clear feedback as to whether or not the car has actually been put in park. Some drivers became aware of this electric parking brake problem after putting their car in park and then realizing that the vehicle is rolling away. Some of them might not have an opportunity to stop the vehicle before it causes damage.

Consumer advocates suspect that the electric parking brake problem could also be due to inadequate design. Without a safety override that automatically puts that car in park or effectively applies the parking brake when the driver exits the vehicle, the parking brake could fail and the vehicle could roll away. Many vehicles on the market have a safeguard built in to prevent this from happening.

Consumers have turned to the complaint system collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to submit concerns over their electric parking brake problem. Some consumers say that they have shifted their car into park but that the vehicle continued to move forward and striking a building. One person even says that their vehicle struck a building in front of them and then shifted into reverse. The car reportedly accelerated backward when the person attempted to put the car in reverse manually.

The new litigation comes a few weeks after Honda was hit with another class action lawsuit over alleged defects in the engines used in Civics and CR-Vs.

Plaintiffs in the Honda Civic class action lawsuit in late 2017 alleged that the electric parking brake problem affects more vehicle years than just 2016, and that drivers of later model year Civics may continue to experience problems. Honda Civic owners and lessees who have already experienced the electric parking brake problem might benefit from participating in a class action investigation.

Hello my name is Kim D. McAdoo, I have a 2016 Honda Civic and I am experiencing problems with the Electric Parking Break System. While driving , the dashed board begin sending an alert “Electric Parking Break Problem.” So when I came to a stop sign I turned the car off thinking that the parking brake switch was on. Nevertheless, the car would not start back up. I had my car towed to the dealership to get it checked. The service department did a diagnostic test and told me it was just a blown fuse. After picking my car up and driving it for one day it started having the same problem. Instead of turning the car off at that time I drove it back to the dealership to have it checked out again. The dealership kept the car for a week and later informed me that they needed to order a part relating to the computer software and that it should fix the problem. The total cost for this service was over $1500. Once the service was completed i drove my car for maybe fifteen minutes and behold the “Electric Parking Break Problem” alert came on again. So instead of turning the car off I drove it back to the dealership. Currently I am at lost of words because no one seems to be able to tell me why my car is experiencing this problem and yet I am being charged every time I take my car back to the dealership.

I purchased a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback sport new in December of 2016. I had to replace the OEM battery within several months because it went defective due to poor quality.
Also, I have had issues with the electronic parking brake operating incorrectly. All kinds of lights then appeared in error.
Car wouldn’t start, stall, and or just die for no apparent reason. So I took it in to the dealership and they tried diagnosis it, however kept insisting I was not certain of what was happening. They claimed that it would surely go away on its own due to normalcy.
However, apparently a lot of individuals that purchased this generation of Honda Civic have had most of if not all of the same problems and symptoms.
Why hasn’t anything been done about any of these vehicles having soo many issues, it’s clearly a lemon! There clearly is a bigger and it needs to be addressed, and made right for the consumer.

I have a Honda Accord 2018 Manual sport edition, parked my car, came back to start it and the electronic parking brakes error comes up on the dash. I can’t start the car cause it won’t start without parking brakes being up. This was a week ago took my car back to Honda and today 10-24-2019 since same problem. This all started after they changed rear brakes and both times I’ve been stranded for hours hell im still stranded. So it’s back to the dealership in the morning

Last year in August 18 I bought honda civic 2018 ex trim 1.6 diesel from Honda dealership in UK, Maidstone, kent. Within first 5 months engine lights pops up for a day and then disappears power train warning, after that parking sensors issues took it back to dealership they said it was fixed but it wasn’t. took it second time to get parking sensor fixed and then it got fixed. This was all within 6 months then after 2 months I parked my car at the usual place. Turn off the car and engaged electronic parking brake . After 8mins of checking and leaving the car. Somehow car started to roll forward goes over the pavement hits another car across and the runs through flats and finally hits the bushes
Honda is saying they can’t find fault . I am sure car has defect but I have no support.

  7. Dimitra says:

I have the 2016 Honda Civic. I have brought it back to the dealership for inspections over 6 times.

    The following issues have occurred:

    1. Screen kept flickering, brought it to Honda dealerships, they “inspected” it and said nothing it wrong

    2. Screen kept flickering and ABS stopped working, brought it back to dealership, they said I needed a new system, waited two weeks and they replaced it

    3. Started my car and still in park my car rolled back, brakes didn’t work, quickly turned off the engine and car stopped, brought it to Honda dealership they said nothing is wrong with it

    4. Car rolled again about a year later, I brought my car again to dealership. They had my car for over 9 hours said they didn’t find anything, picked up my car with over a foot of snow on it.

    5. About a month ago my screen went blank, removed and reinstalled the fuse and since then it has been turning off randomly

    6. My car has been beeping. And not locking properly for 2 years Honda dosent know why

    7. Today! I parked to grab gas started my car and parking break error popped up and my car wouldn’t go into drive, turned car on and off pushed the brake buttons nothing… waited 15-20 minutes the error was still there pushed the brake button again and was able to drive.

In between all my concerns I’ve requested the dealership to look at my vehicle throughly to make sure it’s safe to drive. I’ve never been so disappointed in a car manufacturer ever. I’ve driven Honda for over 15 years. This will definitely be my last Honda vehicle.

I will be bringing my car to Honda tomorrow. Let’s see what they say now.

I also have my honda civic 2016 screen flickering …resolved the issue by going to thr fuse box under the hood and removed the blue colored fuse for a minute and place it back …problem solved.
