Over One Million Vehicles Impacted in GMC Yukon Power Steering Failure ScandalGeneral Motors is facing criticism for potentially dangerous vehicle problems that have led to a GMC Yukon power steering recall.

The company recently announced that it was recalling over a million large pickups and SUVs that may be impacted by faulty GMC Yukon power steering.

According to the recall, the GMC Yukon power steering can shut down temporarily and puts drivers and passengers in serious danger of collision.

More specifically, the Electric Power Steering (EPS) assist may temporarily shut down, then return suddenly due to the low voltage occurring from low speed turns.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated “If EPS assist is lost and then suddenly returns, the driver may have difficulty steering the vehicle, especially at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.” In addition, the NHTSA further stated that when the power steering fails, a dashboard light may come on to indicate there is a problem with the power steering or that dashboard lights may fail entirely.

The power steering failure can also cause other electrical systems in the car to shut down, including traction control, air conditioning, warning chimes, power door locks and cruise control.

Overview of GMC Power Steering Problems

Consumers who are at risk from the GMC Yukon power steering may be at higher risks for car accidents. The GMC Yukon power steering problem was announced in early September 2018, with the company stating it was recalling 1,015,918 pickup trucks and SUVs due to this complication.

General Motors has recalled over a million certain 2015 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups, along with Chevy Tahoe and Suburban SUVs, and 2015 Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon SUVs.

According to General Motors, the power steering failure has resulted in 30 car accidents. While no fatalities have been reported, two people were injured due to the power steering defect.

Speaking to Consumer Reports, GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said, “If you have a weak connection and one or more high amperage systems put too much load on it, you can get a voltage drop.” Wilkinson also stated that “the high load on the steering gear can contribute to the voltage drop, but a number of things also can contribute to a voltage drop and affect steering assist.”

At this time, General Motors dealers will provide updated power steering software to impacted customers at no cost. It is important to note that General Motors had recalled 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra trucks in August 2017 for the same power steering failure issues.

The power steering feature was supposed to be improved by General Motors in vehicles made after 2015. Consumers who were impacted by the GMC Yukon power steering may be able to file legal action against General Motors for any damages they suffered from the recall.

Have this issue with a 2016. Took to dealership they stated no TBS or recall and refused to do the software update. Also had the transmission problem which they refused to acknowledge. If and when this causes an accident will sue both GM and the dealership for not ensuring the safety of their products!
