If you purchased Royal Caribbean cruise insurance with the belief you were receiving the best coverage at the least expensive price, you might be surprised.
Royal Caribbean Cruise, Norwegian Cruise and Disney Cruise Lines are among the highly popular and well-known cruise companies under investigation for possibly using deceptive marketing practices when selling cruise vacation protection plans.
The accusations stem from the alleged failure of these companies to disclose profits gained in the sale of these travel insurance packages which include the following three products:
- Cancellation Fee Waivers
- Travel Insurance Policies offered through various companies, including Transamerica and Nationstar
- Travel Assistance offered by On Call International, Inc.
A customer who purchases Royal Caribbean cruise insurance pays only one price, but the three components reportedly originate from three different companies. Marketing used to sell Royal Caribbean cruise insurance could lead a reasonable consumer to mistakenly believe the single price consists of a fee paid to each of the three providing companies, at least one of which is an independent third party insurance business.
Pitfalls of Royal Caribbean Cruise Insurance
The Royal Caribbean cruise insurance that is currently under investigation is a package that would have been purchased online at the time you bought your cruise ticket. Advertised as the best price possible at the point of purchase, that may not be the case, according to consumer complaints.
Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Disney cruise lines are under investigation for possibly taking an undisclosed kickback for every travel insurance policy sold.
The cruise companies also are suspected of using deceptive marketing tactics to hide their profit interest in the sale of the travel insurance policies by:
- Advertising and selling the insurance policy in a package with non-insurance items without identifying the price paid for each individual item
- Using opt-out marketing tactics
- Advertising and selling travel insurance policies that contain so many restrictions that the policy would never pay a claim
