Filing a Lawsuit Because of IED Injuries in AfghanistanUnited States servicemembers and veterans may be able to file an EFP or IED lawsuit against certain foreign banks that allegedly helped Iran fund terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan.

An EFP or IED lawsuit can help veterans and their loved ones seek damages for any physical injuries, or for emotional damages like funeral expenses.

Overall, an EFP or IED lawsuit can be filed by a United States servicemember, veterans or their loved ones if their life was severely impacted by terrorist attacks in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Current claims allege that several foreign banks were collaborating with Iranian officials to bypass sanctions placed against Iran by the United States.

An EFP or IED lawsuit may also allege that the laundered money was used to manufacture and distribute weapons responsible for killing may soldiers during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The weapons most commonly referred to in these claims include:

  • IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices): These weapons are often used as roadside bombs, and were heavily utilized during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. From the beginning of the Iraq war to 2007, 63% of coalition deaths were due to IEDs. This makes up 66% of deaths in the early days to present time in the Afghanistan war.
  • EFPs (Explosively Formed Penetrators): These weapons were labeled “the most lethal weapon American forces faced in Iraq” by The New York Times due to their ability to piece through armor. These could be hidden from their targets from over 100 yards away and camouflaged easily with rocks or debris.
  • IRAMs (Improvised Rocket Assisted Munitions): Also called rocket propelled bombs, these weapons consist of propane tanks filled with explosives and are powered by 107mm rockets. They can be launched from the backs of trucks and be deployed by remote control.

Overview of Damages in an EFP or IED Lawsuit

Each of these weapons were reportedly used by terrorist organizations and were allegedly made possible by Iran’s illegal kickback arrangement with foreign banks.

By doing this, Iran and these banks violated United States sanctions and can now face legal action under the United States Anti Terrorism Act. The act states that any national may sue for damages that happened “by reason of an act of international terrorism.”

Iran has been labeled a state sponsor of terrorism, with evidence indicating they are linked to various terrorist organizations that had reportedly received billions from country officials outside their borders. The banks named in at least one EFP or IED lawsuit include, but are not limited to:

  • Barclays Plc
  • Commerzbank
  • Credit Suisse Group AG
  • HSBC Holdings Plc
  • Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc
  • Standard Chartered

United States military members or veterans can seek a wide range of damages with their EFP or IED lawsuit, including compensation for:

  • Combat related injuries
  • Blast injuries
  • Mental or physical EFP injuries
  • Mental or physical IED injuries
  • Mental or physical IRAM injuries
  • Death
  • PTSD

There are a number of other injuries that could be caused by an EFP, IED or IRAM weapon, with over two thirds of the United States military injuries being from IEDs and EFPs.
