Numerous Cases Allege Roundup Causes CancerConsumers have filed numerous lawsuits saying that Roundup causes cancer, taking issue with Monsanto’s advertisement of the popular weed killer as safe and effective.

Most recently, Monsanto and its new parent company, Bayer, lost a lawsuit in which a California man claimed that exposure to the weedkillers Roundup and RangerPro caused his cancer. He claimed that the weed killer’s main ingredient, glyphosate, makes the weed killer dangerous.

This win for consumers comes on the heels of many cases claiming Roundup causes cancer — according to Bayer, cases linking the weed killer with cancer have risen from 5,200 to 8,000.

In 2015, the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as “most likely cancer causing,” meaning that there is not definitive proof, but there is evidence suggesting that glyphosate could cause cancer in humans.

However, Bayer and Monsanto are still fighting back against these claims.

Bayer acquired Monsanto in 2018, and allegedly was aware of the growing number of claims that Monsanto’s roundup causes cancer. Speaking to a German newspaper, Bayer CEO Werner Baumann said that “throughout the securing, we did due tirelessness as is standard practice when assuming control over a recorded organization. In doing as such, we obviously additionally thought about the lawful dangers.”

In addressing the public concerns over the use of glyphosate in roundup, and the effect on human and environmental health, Baumann pushed back, saying that “there are risks being cited that have been proven wrong in practical use over 25 years.”

Additionally, Baumann criticized recent regulation limiting the use of glyphosate, including the European Union’s debate to possibly ban glyphosate. The ban did not go through, and the license for glyphosate was approved for five more years. According to Baumann, “regulatory decisions for our products are increasingly overlaid with ideology … We can’t let it happen that progress comes to a standstill in the face of hardened ideological fronts.”

Baumann called glyphosate a “priceless device for producers” because of its value as a weedkiller. Roundup is one of the most popular weedkillers in the world. However, glyphosate could be harming many people around the world as well, and Monsanto and Bayer could know that this is the case.

If a company knowingly produces and sells a dangerous product, and intentionally misrepresents the product as safe and effective, they can be held liable for injury done to consumers by that product.

Many individuals claim that Monsanto knowingly concealed information about the dangers of glyphosate from consumers, so the company could continue profiting from the sale of Roundup. Consumers say that years of exposure to the chemical, whether because of its use as a farming weedkiller or a simple household one, caused them to develop cancer.

However, many people who were diagnosed with cancer may not know that their cancer could be linked to exposure to Roundup. If you or a loved one were exposed to Roundup and then developed cancer, you may have a legal claim. Contacting an experienced lawyer could help you determine if you may have a valid claim, and could be eligible for a Roundup lawsuit investigation.

If you or a loved one developed cancer after using Roundup as a farm worker or home gardener, you may have a legal claim. Legal migrant farm workers may also seek help. Learn more by filling out the form on this page for a FREE case evaluation.
