If you own a Waring blender, you might not realize the appliance might be leaving black specks in your blended foods or drinks.
When food or liquids are blended, the individual components are pounded into pulp and mixed together. If the blender is shedding any type of foreign substance, the human eye probably won’t be able to see it after the blending is complete. Anyone using a clean blender probably isn’t going to expect anything but the ingredients he or she added to be inside their final concoction.
However, consumers have reported finding black specks generated by their Waring blender.
Apparently, the tiny black flakes consist of the material located in the seal under the blades. As the blades turn, the rotating blade assembly allegedly causes friction when it rubs against the seal just under those blades. The seal is there to keep any liquid from leaking out of the container.
The black specks generated by the action of the Waring blender during the pulverizing of foods or drinks are nearly impossible to see within the final mixed product.
Waring Blender Water and White Bowl Test
You can discover if your blender is generating black specks that end up in your food. By using this water and white bowl test, you will know if your blender is adding the unwanted material to your cuisine.
- Simply pour two cups of clean water into a clean white bowl. Then pour the water into a clean blender.
- After running the blender on high for 90 seconds, pour the water back into the white bowl.
- If your blender’s rotating assembly is producing any of the debris, you should be able to see black specks in the bowl.
Consumers use blenders for everything from smoothies to baby food. Some consumers buy organic ingredients to ensure they know exactly what they are eating and drinking. No one wants to see their nutritious food contaminated with tiny particles of non-food material generated by the blender itself.
If you have a Waring blender or any other brand blender that is contributing non-food particles to your blended concoctions, you could qualify to participate in this investigation.
In the past year, Vitamix settled a class action lawsuit regarding similar defects in its blenders. In that case, plaintiffs alleged the Vitamix blenders were adding small flakes of PTFE, a Teflon-like material, to their blended foods and drinks. Those black specks allegedly originated from the seals at the top of the Vitamix blender’s blade assembly.
Vitamix denied the allegations, but said it agreed to the settlement to avoid the costs and hassles of continued litigation. Under the terms of that settlement, which could be worth as much as $300 million, owners of either household or commercial Vitamix blenders were entitled to either a replacement blade assembly that included a seal that would not shed flakes of material. Those with household blenders had the choice of receiving a gift card toward a new Vitamix purchase in lieu of the replacement blade assembly.
If you own a Waring blender that distributes unwanted non-food particles to your blended mixtures, you could qualify to participate in this lawsuit investigation.

I have been using my NutriBullet every day for a year and making smoothies for myself and my kids. I only noticed the flakes as I blended some mango for the first time , so noticed the flakes because of the lighter colour of the smoothie. Worried now because I’m not sure how long we have been injesting these foreign particles and how it will affect our health .
I have a ninja pro and have noticed the black flakes in my smoothie. I cycled it a few times with clean water and tho I see less of these fragments, I still see them. PTFE is a forever chemical that they say will pass through your digestive tract. I don’t necessarily believe this. Had I all the information, I would not have purchased this product.
I have a ninja appliance, and it’s multifaceted with the chopper, BLENDER and Nutri ninja. Recently, while blending the Nutri ninja for smoothies, it has been releasing black flex and metal fragments in to my drink. as others mentioned above, I’m genuinely worried about my house, as I have ingested some of this. It’s also very stinky while blinding it leaking black fluid, it seems very carcinogenic.
I have a Ninja ultima blender. I’ve had it for just over a year and I use it around every second day. I noticed the other day what looked like small black specks around the edge of the cup portion when I unscrewed the top. This morning I blended a drink (it’s now in the fridge to settle) and when I looked at the bottom it appears to have a layer of these black specks all over the bottom of the drink :( This doesn’t seem right for the price of the machine, that it should be doing this after just a year(ish) of use.
Just made a smoothie and realised when coming to clean machine seal missing and now realise have blended and eaten whole seal I am very worried
I noticed this issue as well it is was alarming because I just realized it is not apart of my smoothie… My daughter has drank some before I came to this realization as well. They were black specks… I just turned on the blender and let clear water blend and the specs were present. I’m nervous about what this may have done to our health.
Did you file a complaint ?
I have a vitamix blender that’s leaking from bottom and has been tryed getting ahold of the company a long time ago but no reply back. I’m wondering if it’s safe to use still and if it’s been getting in to our food and looked it up on the web just now and unintentionally found this article that specifically talks about the Vitamix blenders
Please add me. I had 2 Waring blenders. I have 1 away.
