$250K Sexual Assault Settlement Will go to Utah State University VictimMany industries as well as educational institutions are being accused of protecting sexual predators, without prosecuting or disciplining those among them who have committed sexual assault.

Victims of sexual assault in the movie industry, professional sports and higher education have begun to come forward, naming their attackers, and filing sexual assault lawsuits. Many of these lawsuits have ended in sexual assault settlements for victims and their families.

One such victim at Utah State University will be receiving a sexual assault settlement from the school for $250,000. This sexual assault settlement will reconcile the federal lawsuit that was filed against both the school and a Greek organization. She claims that the university knew about the sexual assault yet did not act on the knowledge.

A young female student, Victoria H., was allegedly raped at a fraternity house at Utah State University in July 2015. She claims another student, Brian R., raped her in his bedroom at his Sigma Chi fraternity during a party.

According to the Deseret News, after this, Brian was sentenced to a year in jail for his sexual assault on Victoria and another female student. Victoria was nineteen at the time.

As part of Victoria’s sexual assault settlement from the university, the University will reportedly be changing its sexual assault policies.

She told Deseret News, “I’m extremely happy with the outcome, that the university is willing to work with us. I think they are imperative to changing this whole culture that has become of women and even men feeling like they can’t speak out about their assaults.”

Allegedly, the student who committed the sexual assaults had committed sexual assaults before. At least five other women had come forward the the university claiming Brian had sexually assaulted them. However, neither the fraternity or the university took action. He was allowed to remain on campus as an enrolled student and as a an active part of his Sigma Chi fraternity, living in the fraternity house.

Deseret News also reports, “Members of the fraternity also knew the Kappa Delta sorority had barred Relopez from its activities on reports he had verbally, emotionally and physically abused women in the group.”

Victoria named Sigma Chi and its Gamma Kappa chapter in her lawsuit. Her sexual assault settlement from the university ended her lawsuit against the university, but not against the Greek organizations.

The University has agreed to make changes on campus because of these situations. In a statement, USU said, “We worked with Victoria and her family in a collaborative process to create a set of commitments that will result in meaningful changes for student safety.”

Additionally, the University says that it knows it has work to do to improve sexual assault prevention as well as response efforts. They are now making sexual assault training mandatory for all incoming students and are training employees on reporting procedures.

If you have been the victim of sexual assault, you may be able to file a sexual assault lawsuit. Filing a sexual assault lawsuit may help you gain a sexual assault settlement.
