Many parents know that they should secure tall furniture to the wall in order to prevent dresser tipover accidents with their children. But furniture manufacturers also have a responsibility to provide safe products for their customers.
Those who have purchased a Target Room Essentials dresser may be eligible for monetary compensation due to a recall because of dresser tipover problems.
Target Dresser Tipover Risks
Late in 2017, Target announced that it was recalling 175,000 of their Room Essentials four-drawer dressers because of dresser tipover problems. According to a Good Housekeeping article, if the dresser is not anchored to the wall, it may tip over. Because of these dresser tipover risks, Target has decided to recall their products.
These popular dressers were sold nationwide in Target Stores and from their online portal between January 2013 and April 2016. The Room Essentials four-drawer dressers with potential dresser tipover problems retailed for about $120. These dressers were sold in three different colors including white, black and espresso.
Good Housekeeping reports that nobody has actually been injured by the dressers. However, twelve dressers have reportedly collapsed or fallen over. These dresser tipover risks can be worrisome for parents of small children who may inadvertently climb on a dresser.
If you own one of these Target Room Essentials four-drawer dressers, even if no one has been injured, you may be eligible for a refund. Talking to an attorney can help you determine your legal options.
Other Dresser Tipover Risks and Recalls
The Target Room Essentials dresser is not the only unsafe dresser posing dresser tipover risks. Other dressers sold by retailers such as BabiesRus.com, Amazon, BabyUniverse.com, Baby.com, Furniture Kidz, Ikea, JCPenney, Walmart and Natart Juvenile have been linked to reports of a tipover risk, and many have been recalled.
One popular chest of drawers made by Ameriwood Home and sold by Walmart, the Mainstays four-draw dresser, has been recalled because of dresser tipover problem. These pieces of furniture were investigated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission for dresser tipover risks and were recalled in the latter half of 2017. A child was injured when one of these dressers fell, prompting the recall.
This recall affected about 1.6 million units sold over the course of about seven years between 2009 and 2016.
Another dresser model, the Natart Chelsea Dresser, was recalled following reports of a young child being killed after the dresser tipped over and fell on the toddler. These dressers were sold by Furniture Kidz, Baby.com and other retailers from January 2005 until December 2010.
The Natart Chelsea dressers were sold for $600 to $900 and have a “Natart” sticker attached to the inside of the top drawer.
Other potentially dangerous recalled dressers include the Million Dollar Baby “Emily” and “Ryan” four drawer dressers. These dressers, sold by Amazon, BabiesRus.com, BabyUniverse.com and JCPenney between January 2006 and June 2010, retailed for about $230-$300.
If you own any of these dressers with potential dresser tipover risks, the CPSC recommends discontinuing use immediately.
