Product Recalls Issued over Risk of Dresser Tipping OverIn recent years, many styles of dressers have been recalled because they pose a severe risk of tipping over, possibly injuring people. The risk of a dresser tipping over is high because there are no laws that regulate the size and shape of dressers in the interest of preventing them from tipping over.

Tragically, children and the elderly are at highest risk to being injured or killed because of a dresser tipping over, because they often do not have the strength needed to push a dresser off of themselves or to stop a dresser from falling in the first place.

Because toppling dressers can cause injury, furniture companies have had to recall dressers after consumers reported injury and put legal pressure on the companies to take action to protect consumers.

Retailers who have had to recall dressers in recent years because of a risk of the dresser tipping over include:

  • Amazon.com
  • BabiesRus.com
  • Baby.com
  • BabyUniverse.com
  • Furniture Kidz
  • Ikea
  • JCPenney
  • Natart Juvenile
  • Target
  • Walmart

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urges consumers who own a dresser that has been recalled for a tip-over risk to immediately stop using the dresser, and make sure that children cannot reach the dresser.

Many dressers have had to be recalled because they do not follow industry guidelines for safety. Though there are no laws in place that require dressers to be a certain size or weight to be sold to the general public, there are voluntary industry standards available that, if followed, can make a dresser safer and less likely to tip over during normal use.

The furniture industry has stated that any dresser that is taller than 30 inches should be able to stand upright without moving when 50 pounds of weight are hanging from an open drawer. However, consumers should be aware that these standards are voluntary in the industry, meaning that manufacturers are not required to make dressers fit these specifications to be able to sell them.

In fact, studies suggest that even these standards are insufficient. Consumer Reports conducted a study that assessed the stability of dressers available to the public. During this investigation, Consumer Reports developed a more rigorous standard for dressers, advising that a dresser should able to hold up to 60 pounds of weight from an open drawer without toppling over. Allegedly, this weight more accurately reflects the weight of children under six years old, who are likely to grab onto an open drawer.

In the case of a recall, consumers may be able to get compensation for a dresser that they purchased and should no longer use because of the risk of injury. However, many consumers are not aware that a dresser they own has been recalled, or do not know that they may be eligible for compensation for their unsafe dresser. If you own a dresser that was subject to real because of a potential tip over hazard, you may be entitled to compensation.
