Four years ago, an underage high school senior visiting the campus of Tulane University in New Orleans and was allegedly raped by two of the school’s football players. The young lady reported the incident to the police, and a sexual assault lawsuit was filed.
The sexual assault lawsuit was filed in Orleans Parish Civil District Court under a pseudonym to protect the identity of the victim.
According to a New Orleans Advocate article, the sexual assault lawsuit alleged that the university failed to provide appropriate care and supervision during a college recruiting event involving the young woman.
The event designed to attract would-be students to the school purportedly quickly transformed as the day dwindled into the evening hours.
In the article that reported on the sexual assault lawsuit, the victim claims that she—as a recruit—was provided a chaperone from Tulane’s women’s basketball team and was encouraged to go drinking with the team along with one other visiting female.
The alleged chaperone provided each of the recruits with a phony ID card to assist them in the festivities and pushed alcoholic consumption on them by purchasing multiple drinks on their behalf.
According to the New Orleans Advocate’s investigation into the sexual assault lawsuit, the plaintiff reports that she woke up in a dorm room sometime later while she was being sexually violated by one of the alleged football players.
The police department of New Orleans responded to the situation by booking Niguel Veal—also known as Teddy—for rape. The other member of the football team named in the sexual assault lawsuit as a defendant was Raul Diaz—also known as Junior.
Raul spoke to the police and admitted to having sex with the high school senior but claimed that the activity was agreed upon by both parties, the Advocate says. He was never arrested or booked for rape.
As reported by a sex crimes detective, the victim had supposedly sent text messages which revealed her state of inebriation around the time of the rape and lack of understanding regarding what was happening to her.
Despite this, the District Attorney for Orleans Parish claimed that he lacked the concrete evidence necessary in the fall of 2014 to prosecute the case.
The sexual assault lawsuit was, however, recently settled by Tulane University, without the terms and conditions of the arrangement being made available to the public.
