Close Up of irritated red blood eye.A recent class action investigation has been launched against Rodan and Fields for certain Lash Boost ingredients, which allegedly contain products that were supposed to be reviewed by the FDA before being put on the market.

Lash Boost ingredients include isopropyl cloprostenate, which is considered a regulated substance by the FDA. Lash Boost ingredients also consist of keratin, biotin, and almond extract, and other ingredients to encourage eyelash growth, including isopropyl cloprostenate.

Isopropyl cloprostenate is part of a class of compounds called prostaglandin analogs, which are often found in medications used to treat glaucoma. However this ingredient can cause changes in certain biological functions and structures. Side effects can include:

  • Dry Eye
  • Eye Irritation
  • Eye Inflammation
  • Eye Redness
  • Iris Color Change
  • Macular Edema
  • Low Intraocular Pressure

Even though isopropyl cloprostenate is approved in prescription medication, the FDA has not approved it to be an active ingredient in cosmetic products.

It is important to note that Rodan and Fields is not the first company to face scrutiny from the FDA for using this ingredient. Lifetech Resources LLC received warning letters from the FDA after including isopropyl cloprostenate in their cosmetic products.

In addition, the FDA has stated isopropyl cloprostenate is not safe to use without medical supervision or for casual use.

Overview of Lash Boost Ingredients Concern

Even with all the caution surrounding this ingredient, Rodan and Fields still allegedly added this chemical to Lash Boost ingredients. News of this information has spurred major concern in the general public.

Lash Boost is marketed as an eyelash enhancer. The company says that their product can improve eyelash appearance in just four weeks. According to the Rodan and Fiends website, the Lash Boost ingredients create a “unique proprietary formula that improves the appearance of lash volume and length for lashes that are 100% real.”

However, a number of consumers have complained the $150 price tag is not worth it, as the longevity of the product has not been fully tested and could induce unwanted side effects. The side effects some consumers reported included eye irritation if the lash serum makes direct contact, or tingling and redness in the eyes after only after a few uses.

Lash Boost has also allegedly caused consumers’ lashes to darken, and be a different color from the rest of their hair. Rodan and Fields recommend consumers test whether or not their skin is compatible with Lash Boost before using it, by performing a patch test or use very little during the first use.

The patch test is when the beauty product is applied on one of the eyes, with consumers needing to wait for twenty-four hours to see if there are any reactions. Alternatively, says the company, applying very little of the beauty product on a regular basis could get the skin used to the product.

Even with these precautions in place, consumers are still at risk for ocular complications if exposed to Lash Boost ingredients. Lash Boost is facing class action investigators, who are reviewing potential product liability claims for consumers.
