settlement check in the mailboxClaimants say they’ve begun to receive payments from two class action settlements, one with HSBC and the other with a group of LCD flat panel device manufacturers.

According to Top Class Actions viewers, checks have started to arrive from a $13 million California class action settlement resolving allegations that HSBC violated California privacy laws by recording phone calls without permission. Viewers say they’ve received checks worth as much as $53.34.

This HSBC class action settlement resolved claims in three different class action lawsuits. Plaintiffs in those actions accuse HSBC Technology & Services and HSBC Card Services of unlawfully recording or monitoring phone calls with California credit card holders, without first getting the card holders’ permission or notifying them of the recording.

California is a “two-party consent” state when it comes to recording phone calls. Under the California Invasion of Privacy Act, recording a conversation is illegal unless all parties to the conversation consent to the recording. Companies who violate that law may be subject to statutory penalties as high as $5,000.

Class Members covered by the HSBC settlement include all persons in California who received a call from HSBC between March 23, 2009 and May 1, 2012 and whose call was recorded by HSBC.

The deadline for filing claims in the HSBC class action settlement was Aug. 28, 2017.

In the Illinois LCD flat panel device class action settlement, checks are now being distributed to Illinois residents who were allegedly affected by an effort to manipulate the prices of LCD screen products. Top Class Actions viewers say they’ve received checks as large as $1,290.13.

This $104 million settlement is the product of an enforcement action brought by the Illinois Attorney General against several manufacturers and suppliers of thin-film liquid crystal display panels. These panels are used as display screens in products like computer monitors, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and flat-panel televisions.

The alleged price-fixing conspiracy caused Illinois residents to pay more for these products than they should have, according to the attorney general.

Six of the named defendants agreed to this settlement. Three other defendants, including Toshiba Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co., declined to settle.

The court approved the distribution of settlement checks on Jan. 8, 2017. Checks for this settlement began to hit the mail on Feb. 27, 2018, according to an update on the settlement website.
