10th anniversary of 9/11 in New York City: Soldier is staying near Memorial at World Trade Center Ground ZeroIn the aftermath of the horror of September 11, 2001, thousands of people were exposed to dangerous airborne materials and have fallen ill with certain serious diseases since then. Those exposed to these chemicals and materials may have since been diagnosed with a variety of 9/11 cancer types, including lung cancer, breast cancer, and many more.

While some were injured or killed immediately at the scene, it may have taken others years to realize that they had been affected. This is because at Ground Zero there were a number of dangerous toxins in the air that may have lead to diseases.

Many people may have been exposed to these dangerous toxins and may be eligible to receive money from the Victim Compensation Fund, including first responders, construction workers, city workers, and nearby students and residents.

The 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund

After devastating attacks shook New York City years ago, the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund was established to provide financial support to those harmed during the terrorist attacks. The fund covers not only those who were immediately injured and the families of those who were killed, but also those who have been diagnosed with one of a number of eligible 9/11 cancer types since exposure at Ground Zero.

Cash awards from the fund are tax-free, and can help with compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses, and lost wages. In total, the fund amounts to around $7.3 billion. An individual may receive hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, up to millions. Others may be eligible to receive free medical care for life.

People eligible for the Victim Compensation Fund are those who were in the vicinity of Ground Zero in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, and prior to May 31, 2002, who were later diagnosed with one of the more than 70 eligible 9/11 cancer types. Diagnoses of these cancer must have been made at least four years after the exposure, except in the case of blood and bone cancers, which must have been diagnosed at least one year after the exposure.

So far, the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund has received 28,609 eligibility forms, and 16,942 have been approved, with thousands more yet to be processed.
