NutriBullet explosionThe makers of the powerful NutriBullet blender are facing a growing number of lawsuits filed by plaintiffs who allege they suffered severe cuts or burns when their devices exploded during use.

According to the NutriBullet lawsuits, pressure builds up in the blender due to the heat caused by the quickly-spinning blades. As a result, the blender’s contents allegedly heat up and cause the canister to burst.

The plaintiffs have reported a variety of serious injuries that they allegedly suffered when their NutriBullet blenders exploded, including second-degree burns, lacerations and permanent nerve damage.

At least 22 people are already suing NutriBullet, according to Doug Rochen, an attorney who is representing the plaintiffs.

“This product really has no safety features at all,” Rochen told FOX 11. Because the NutriBullet is a sealed container, there is no way for pressure to escape, he says. There is also no off switch, according to Rochen.

“It builds up pressure, and heat within the unit, which causes the body of the vessel to separate from the blade assembly like a rocket ship, and it explodes,” Rochen said.

The NutriBullet lawsuits claim that the plaintiffs were injured when the NutriBullet blenders were on for only about 20 seconds. None of the plaintiffs were reportedly blending hot liquids when their NutriBullets exploded.

“I had my hands on it, like you normally do as you put it in and turn to lock it in place, and it was on for maybe 15 to 20 seconds and it exploded,” plaintiff Sheryl Utal told FOX 11. “It spins so fast that it heats up the contents, the contents get under pressure, and the device explodes, so that hot liquid exploded onto me and created nasty burns.”

Plaintiff Brendan Cosso also says he was using the NutriBullet for just about 20 seconds before it burst.

“The two blades basically chopped into my palm, still to this day, I can’t feel my finger,” Cosso, who allegedly suffered the injury in September, told FOX 11.

The NutriBullet makers deny the allegations and maintain that the issues are related to user error. The NutriBullet manual reportedly does warn that using NutriBullet for longer than one minute may cause the contents to reach unsafe temperatures. An attorney representing NutriBullet noted that the manuals have changed over the years to add more warnings and other information in response to customers who were allegedly “misusing” the NutriBullet.

The company has released an official statement about the NutriBullet lawsuits:

“Customer safety and satisfaction are paramount at NutriBullet. Reports of blenders, which have operated normally for years, suddenly turning cool ingredients into scalding hot mixtures after less than 20 seconds of normal operation or components unthreading during use, are perplexing and contrary to the hundreds of millions of uses by satisfied NutriBullet customers worldwide. We will investigate the claims thoroughly and analyze the blenders in question to determine exactly what happened. Whatever the circumstances surrounding these accidents, we wish prompt and complete recoveries to those involved.”
