pressure cooker explosion explodePressure cookers have of late become all the rage. Because of this trend, it is important to note that some models have been linked to accidents resulting in injury, according to previous legal complaints. One of those appliances at issue is the Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker.

The Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker was the cause of significant burns, according  to a Texas woman who filed a product liability lawsuit after she was injured. She alleged she had purchased a Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker off of the Home Shopping Network and purportedly used it according to stated instructions to make a seafood gumbo.

When the appliance finished its cooking time, the woman says, she pulled the plug on the device and allowed the pressure to be reduced and steam escape.

After the Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker was allowed to rest for almost a half an hour, the complainant removed the lid. She alleges the contents boiled up and the spewing juices were the source of second and third-degree burns that occurred on her chest, abdomen, arm, leg and foot. The emergency event led her to be hospitalized.

How Do Pressure Cookers Work?

Pressure cookers work by sealing in steam that is created when the contents of a pot are heated over a stove or internal heating element. Some electric power pressure cookers can do the same thing on a countertop. The secured lid of the pot traps this steam and the temperature builds internally, cooking the food inside much more quickly than normal. The pressure inside the pot can reach 15 pounds per square inch.

Because of the high pressure, hot temperatures, and steam involved in using a pressure cooker, a unit with a design or manufacturing problem can pose a serious threat to its user.

Some of the problems that have been reported with the Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker as well as with Aldi, Crofton, Cuisinart, Maxi-Matic, and Tristar models have included lids blowing off, contents exploding causing burns, and faulty safety valves allowing for a lid to be opened while the contents are still pressurized.

Pressure Cooker Lawsuits

There have been numerous pressure cooker lawsuits over the last several years. An Ohio judge recently certified a pressure cooker class action lawsuit against the makers of Tristar pressure cookers in June 2017.

The three plaintiffs involved say they were injured by very hot food that exploded out of their cooker because of what they allege to be a design defect. They believe the design defect is that the cooker allows the lid to be removed or opened when too much steam pressure is still present within the unit. This defect flies in the face of what should be an operative safety mechanism.

You may be eligible to file a personal injury lawsuit or join a class action investigation looking into issues of product liability. Even if you were not injured, you and other purchasers still have the right to get the value you paid for.
