The settlement resolves claims that Sylvania falsely advertised its headlights as being brighter and lasting longer than competing products. A Sylvania class action lawsuit alleged that despite being more expensive than other headlights on the market, Sylvania headlights had a shorter life expectancy than the company stated.

Sylvania denied the allegations but agreed to pay $30 million to settle the false advertising class action lawsuit.

Class Members included all U.S. consumers who purchased one (or more) of the following Sylvania headlights between Sept. 22, 2005 and July 11, 2014: SilverStar ULTRA, SilverStar, XtraVision or Cool Blue replacement headlight capsules; SilverStar, XtraVision or Cool Blue sealed beam headlights; and SilverStar fog or auxiliary lights.

On Aug. 13, 2015, Top Class Actions viewers started receiving a first round of settlement checks worth as much as $11.70. According to the settlement administrator, several thousand Class Members ended up not cashing their initial checks, so all those who did were sent a second distribution of the remaining settlement fund.

The deadline to file a claim for the Sylvania class action settlement passed on Nov. 14, 2014.
