Unum-LTD-insurance-benefitsA Colorado woman recently filed a lawsuit against Unum Life Insurance Company of America, alleging that it denied her LTD insurance benefits she was rightfully owed.

The plaintiff, Brenda S., alleges in her Unum lawsuit that the life insurance company wrongfully denied her LTD insurance benefits.

According to the lawsuit, Brenda underwent surgeries in 2014 and 2015 that resulted in chronic pain syndrome, limiting her abilities both in her daily activities and in her physical work capabilities, thus disabling her from her regular occupation. She alleges that this disability entitles her to certain LTD insurance benefits through her insurance policy with Unum Life Insurance Company of America.

The lawsuit notes that Brenda was a Motor Vehicle Training Supervisor for the Douglas County Motor Vehicle Department in Colorado and that, after her surgeries, she was unable to continue performing her work. Brenda provided information about her medical treatment and disability to Unum, and was initially given disability benefits through May 12, 2016. Yet the life insurance company denied her LTD insurance benefits, cutting off her benefits at this point.

The Unum lawsuit claims that this denial of LTD insurance benefits, and indeed this reversal from the company’s original assessment, was wrongful, and that Unum “acted unreasonably in denying the Plaintiff’s claim.”

Brenda’s Unum LTD insurance benefits lawsuit made three claims: first, for benefits due through the terms of her Unum policy; second, for bad faith breach of Unum’s insurance contract with her; and third, for unreasonable conduct of an insurance contract.

Filing a Unum Lawsuit Over Denial of LTD Insurance Benefits

Unum Life Insurance Company of America, also known simply as Unum, is the largest disability insurance company here in the United States.

A growing number of plaintiffs, including many in similar situations to Brenda’s, have filed disability benefits lawsuits against Unum after being denied LTD insurance benefits they were owed according to their policies with Unum. These plaintiffs allege the insurance giant unfairly denied claims for LTD insurance benefits they were rightfully owed.

Brenda’s Unum lawsuit and others like it allege that Unum unfairly denied claims for LTD insurance benefits by plaintiffs who are, in fact, qualified to receive such benefits. Some Unum lawsuits go further, alleging that the company purposely denied claims of LTD insurance benefits for hundreds of thousands of workers with legitimate disabilities, placing company profit ahead of client safety.

Consumers who have exhausted all recourse through applications and appeals for disability benefits may turn to filing an Unum lawsuit in response, hoping to reverse their denied claim of LTD insurance benefits from Unum.

If you or someone you know has been denied their proper LTD insurance benefits by Unum Life Insurance Company of America, you may be able to file an Unum lawsuit over a denied claim for LTD insurance benefits.

Brenda’s Unum LTD Insurance Benefits Lawsuit is Case No. 1:170cv00644, in the U.S. District Court for the Douglas County District of Colorado.
